"Great Food and Service. I moved to Houston nearly two years ago, and drove by this place while looking around for a place to live and said how neat looking of a building is that for a restaurant...but the reviews for another place were better and I passed it by. While living here I've passed it numerous times and kept saying I should try that place out sometime...and stopped someplace else to eat. Then the Houston Press put out its top 10 restaurants in Houston and figured most of my favorites made the list so my fiance and I tried a few that we hadn't been to. She had the mixed fajitas, I had the whole fish fajita and also had the shrimp and avocado appetizer. We thought the food was fantastic. The chicken fajita was...chicken fajita. Not bad chicken, not great chicken it's just chicken. The steak it came with however however was outstanding. Perfectly cooked and well seasoned. I ranked it just under Ninfa's on Navigation until Cyclone Anejas came into my life(but that's another review). We've been to several Mexican Seafood places around town and this snapper blew them all away. Not nearly as greasy as El Tampico and far fresher then what I've had at Connie's. Service was fine, always trying to upsell...but that seems to be anywhere. Not too pushy about it at least. We were seated fast and as we arrived early we were able to avoid the valet(What's up with that...everywhere we go it seems). Two thumbs up!"

Very good straight Tex Mex. Correct, roux based enchilada sauce. No canned stuff. Service very good. They must have been hanging around Chic Fil a.

Love this place! El Real serves solid Tex sex at good prices and with great service in a lively atmosphere. The margaritas are excellent and affordable. To round it off, those who live in the neighborhood can use a large discount available on Monday

El Real has a name. It is said to be a really good Tex mex place. It was definitely good, but I wasn't sure if it was extremely good. It is a big restaurant and surprisingly the menu is simple and to the point. The service is pretty good. Best aroma I've ever tasted! You can say that everything is done from scratch with every bite. Would definitely make the trip again, just try something else on the menu. Even John Wayne observed on the big screen. It just won't be better than that! Must come try this after reading several of Rob Walsh books and are very happy that we!!!! Pleasant culinary experience and wonderful service.

Where else should I go to celebrate National Margarita Day? Why not here? The margaritas were a tad bit Limey but the chile con Queso rocked. I found the chips light and airy. We ordered the mixed and chicken fajitas. The meat were well flavored. The Refried beans were top-notch. Maybe the owner will find this as an insult but I felt El Real had the same flavor profile as Pappasito's. That is a huge compliment.

A weekday evening for dinner. This building has many memories for me. My previous visit to this address, El Real was Clubland Nightclub, 30 years ago. Before, I saw Spyro Gyra, an American jazz fusion band, in the concert at the tower. The atmosphere is not your typical Tex Mexican restaurant. A Western is projected on a screen on a huge wall that is visible everywhere. This night was the film “Two Mules for Sister Sara” (Clint Eastwood Shirley MacLaine – 1970). The food came out quickly and was good. Our waiter was attentive to our table, but disappeared when it was time to close our tab. View menu

Historically significant. Recreating the recipes and taste of Tex-Mex from our youth and bringing back memories of the Tex-Mex that we grew up on. Excellent fajitas. Excellent combination plates. A lady making tortillas to order. Great bar. Great ambience. Be sure to check out the collection of Tex-Mex memorabilia on the 2nd floor. Recommended. Off menu item when available: An excellent burger. Recommended plate: The Chingo Bling, named after Houston's own Hispanic hip-hop artist and humorist. Alternatively: Enchiladas Suizas as a departure from classic Tex-Mex. Enchiladas Borunda as a West Texas variant.

Went to this place once about 3 years back, and the food was too salty. I know, it 's Mexican food, it 's supposed to be salty, but it was almost inedible. Hadn 't given it another try since, but recently moved back to the neighborhood (within walking distance I thought I 'd take a shot. Definitely redeemed itself. Had the Enchiladas Suizas, which come in a creamy bacon sauce. Waiter suggested topping it with an egg, which worked surprisingly well (maybe because of the existing bacon flavor?? . When they came out, my initial reaction was that there was way too much sauce, but by the time I finished, it come out just about right. Still maybe a hair too salty, but more a hair too salty for my...

"Food good. Location good. Service good. BUT, the hidden charges REALLY ruined an otherwise nice experience. Example: HH menu lists Martinis as a $3 upcharge to the $7 base charge. Fair enough. Bombay is a listed alcohol; requested. When the bill was returned I was charged for a Bombay Sapphire which is not on the HH list. Charge? $11 $3. I asked for Bombay, not Bombay Sapphire. Waiter: Oh, let me look into that. AND, by the way Blue Cheese olives? Extra $1. REALLY? I 've NEVER paid extra for BC olives ANYWHERE. AND the confusing menus that a dish as including an extra sauce, [and I don 't recall the exact language but it made it seem that an additional items could be selected as well. Oops, there goes an extra $10.95. AND, the waiter recommending a twice-baked potato. Bah, boom, another $5.95. [which in fairness is disclosed on the menu in a different location, but waiter made it sound as if it was a no-charge option on the surf and turf. AND the split plate charge which I don 't think was disclosed on the menu. Ding, ding, extra $3.00. Was this a waiter, who was overly up-selling or restaurant deception? Don 't know. As I said, the food WAS good. AND, the ambience [at least in the bar area, stay away of the hotel-ballroom-like main dining area was nice. Just beware the nickel and dime charges that the waiter won 't be disclosing to you."
