"This was a middling and overall disappointing experience given both the price point and hype. The new location in downtown Waterbury while nice, new, and clean, is soulless in comparison to the original location, it 's bright, sterile and very loud. The open floorplan does not make it feel like a special or unique place to eat. The food was honestly mediocre. The parker house rolls were the best thing we tried. Swordfish was overcooked and tough, the sauce while flavorful was quite bland. The duck was well cooked but the kale paired with it was bitter and rough, leaving a lot to be desired. The house made ice cream was quite good... But when the highlights of a $250 dinner for two were dinner rolls and a couple scoops of standard ice cream flavors, I 've got to ask myself what is the point? The service was good, hardly exceptional, they were friendly and fairly attentive. Maybe this speaks more to the mediocre level of fine dining in Vermont and/or post-pandemic, but I won 't be coming back soon. Doc Ponds has a very similar vibe even though it 's a more 'casual ' restaurant and this is supposedly 'fine dining ', but the food there is better, service is comparable and the menu is just as interesting for a fraction of the cost, also run by the same group."

An excellent experience overall. The service is superb, the food excellent. Yes it’s expensive, but it’s very worth the price.

Probably the nightlight of our trip to Stowe this last weekend. The menu here is small for good reason, they use the freshest and local ingredients which makes the food so amazing! If it’s in your budget to try this place out, please do, you won’t regret it! I’m still thinking about the duck I had. 5 stars all around!!

What an amazing culinary experience! Everything was unique and enjoyable. All simple dishes elevated in a way that that they unforgettable. We didn’t have a reservation and were able to get a seat at the bar. Conveniently they keep a waitlist for bar seating so that helped. It was worth the wait, but if you want a table make a reservation. The bar tender was very kind and did a great job making drinks and interacting with clients. Would definitely recommend this place if you are anywhere in the area.

Overall a good but not overwhelmingexperience at Hen of the Wood. Ordered a large portion of the menu and some of the dishes were confusing the braised ham was swimming in olive oil and didn’t seem to have any other flavor to make it memorable. Mushroom toast (pictured) which seems to be there signature dish, was one half piece of bread on a huge plate barely enough to even share among 2 people. Entrees of pappardelle and hanger steak were highlights. No dessert and the drinks were relatively small for the price point. View menu

I tried unsuccessfully on several previous visits to Vermont to get reservations at Hen of the Woods. This time, we planned ahead for our party of 6, attracted by the rave reviews. Our high expectations were met with disappointment. None of us, foodies all, were blown away by the presentation, or creativity, or ambiance. The steak was cold, the polenta was soupy, the service lackluster and inattentive. There is better and less expensive food to be had, as we did experience at Jessica's in Middlebury, Leunig's in Burlington, and the Black Sheep Bistro in Vergennes.

"This restaurant has been a favorite of my partner since the eighties when it was merely a small Italian grocery store and deli, known for its hot and cold grinders. About twenty years ago, it transitioned into the popular restaurant it is today. Starting with her cucumber martini made with Hendricks Gin, I must say it was the best cucumber martini I've ever had—absolutely perfect in taste, balance, and coldness. (Patrons can also opt for Crop cucumber vodka.) The cocktail menu is impressive. The Cabernet Sauvignon we chose was smooth and paired beautifully with our meal. The Mozzarella Di Casa was particularly noteworthy, featuring a satisfying crunch from the bread and a creamy lemon butter wine sauce, presenting a refreshing twist on the traditional En Carozza version usually served with red sauce. The visual presentation, cut into triangles, was enticing even before the first bite. The soup of the day was a creative take on chicken gumbo, perfect for the chilly February weather; we shared a cup, which was hearty and packed with chicken, chorizo sausage, and vegetables—a bowl of it would make a great meal on its own. The house bread was another highlight, offered in two varieties—one topped with sesame seeds, and the other plain. The lobster ravioli with pink champagne sauce was perfectly dense and incredibly flavorful. My partner remarked that one of his old friends always orders this when they dine together; I can see why, and I was pleased to have leftovers for the next day. D'Amelio's take on Veal Saltimbocca deviates from the traditional Alla Romana style by incorporating Portobello mushrooms, but my partner enjoyed it immensely and had no complaints about this interpretation. The dish also came with mozzarella, and the sautéed spinach she chose as a side was cooked just right, leaving her satisfied with her leftovers as well. We rounded off the meal with two cappuccinos—one with Amaretto and the other with Bailey's—which added a lovely touch to this wonderful culinary experience. They also offer lunch specials, including salads and paninis, for those dining during the day. Additionally, there’s a private event room on the ground floor for larger parties, a separate bar, and two floors of dining options. Buon appetito!"
