"Update! I'm pleased to say my most recent trip to Monroes on Beach Blvd was another great experience! My son and I arrived 4 PM last Friday afternoon. This is a good time because its between lunch dinner, not too crowded. We were greeted and seated quickly. Monroes is still operating on a somewhat limited menu due to Covid, but I got what I wanted, so I was happier than a pig in slop lol (I grew up on a farm and we had swine, what can I say?! ... I chose the 2 meat combo with Burnt Ends and Carolina Pork (sides potato salad mac n cheese ...my son opted for the Smoked Meatloaf (sides green beans baked sweet potato . I have to admit, I was tempted to try the meatloaf myself, but satisfied my craving with a bite from my sons plate. It was pretty darn good. Don't think I've ever seen meatloaf in a barbque joint. That's a Plus in my book! I also love Monroes green beans, and my son enjoyed his. But guess I was feeling like carbs. The potato salad has to be housemade, because it's nothing what most places serve these days (a scoop of something yellowish from a giant food service container . The potato salad was simply potatoes cut into chunks and maybe a little onion and mayo added. Creamy and a nice accompaniment to the meat. Not overpowering. The Mac Cheese was better than most out there too. My Burnt Ends were to die for! There are just no words to describe how good. Now if you've never had Burnt Ends before, a word of warning: you may have some pieces that are more fat than meat. That happens just about anywhere you go. And confirms that you are getting the real thing! So don't worry too much about that. My Carolina Pulled Pork was not exactly as I remembered it from previous visits...it did have a nice flavor (and I even had leftovers to take home for a sandwich ...but something was different in the preparation this time. Something I think that really distinguishes one barbque place from another is the sides and bread. Monroes definitely has some real good sides! The bread was white bread buttered and grilled. Some places offer just plain white bread, and others, just a cold white roll. I'm not a big bread person myself. And everyone has their own preferences. But I wish more barbque restaurants would offer biscuits or cornbread instead of white bread/toast/rolls. Monroes also has huge beverage cups and the friendliest servers anywhere. You will notice regulars coming in and picking up meat or a to go order. It feels like home! So head over to Monroes and enjoy yourself-you deserve it!"
