"They are not being honest about the use of MSG in their food. For those who are allergic or sensitive to food chemicals, this place could be life-threatening. Vegetable stock doesn’t have the salty and dark characteristics of soy sauce on its own. If you’ve ever tasted pure vegetable stock, you’ll understand what I mean. It’s fine to use MSG in cooking, but you must be truthful with customers when they ask about it; there’s usually a reason they're inquiring. Anyway, this soup is easy to prepare, so if you don’t want my business, I can just make it myself. Mine actually looks much better, and there’s no "secret ingredient" in it! Don’t forget to add ginger when boiling!"

I've been visiting this restaurant at least once or twice a week for over five years, and I've finally decided to write a review. I've really gotten to know the wonderful family that runs this place. The Vietnamese food here is fantastic and truly authentic. My go-to dish is the number nine pho, which I believe is the best in Grand Rapids. If you haven't tried it yet, you definitely should! Atmosphere: 5.

A Taste of Home Away from Home! As a Vietnamese daughter who can't quite replicate her parents' pho magic, stumbling upon this gem of a restaurant was a heartwarming surprise! The authenticity of the place, combined with the incredible flavors of their pho, instantly transported me back to family dinners. This is undeniably the best pho spot in town. The rich broth and fresh ingredients make it a must-visit for anyone craving a genuine taste of Vietnamese comfort. Grateful to have found this delicious mom and pop pho haven!

"Simple fish gets a 2 star. Sadly. I really wanted to like it! TL;DR This should be a TAKEOUT ONLY kind of place. DO NOT DINE IN! The food is pretty decent Like 3 4 stars but the service was a horrible 1 star. My husband and I went on a Wednesday night (not a particularly busy night . There was only one guy working the whole restaurant. He had to be host and waiter! And he was not the kind of kid who was ready for a front facing job. He was painfully shy, didn't give us menus or utensils when he sat us, took our drink order after we'd been sitting for 20 minutes and when he did I gave him our full order. It was clear he was overwhelmed and that we probably wouldn't see him again for a while! It was frustrating for everyone. Our table wasn't the only one having to get up to get their utensils and napkins. The poor guy seemed like he was just trying to make it through the night. But that also meant as a diner we were ignored and our soup was cold when it finally came out. Also, the ambiance was stressful. The music playing was too quiet and soft so you could hear everyone's conversations. It felt like eating dinner at a library or spa. It just made the waiter's nervousness that much more awkward. Basically, I would only go back if doing takeout. But honestly, I'm not going to go back. There are too many places in Grand Rapids that actually care about their customers and offer a good experience with better sushi to go back to Simple Fish. TO THE OWNER: If you are too short staffed to deliver a good dining experience then you need to think of alternatives (ie, closed dining and takeout only or changing the style to fast casual patrons serve themselves."
