Shanghai Dumpling - Menu

Very yummy. Had dry hot pot, soup buns, scallion pancakes which were soooo good and had custard buns for dessert and they was also delicious. Can't wait to come back to try something else!

The dumplings were amazing! I ordered the soup, crab dumplings, and pot stickers, and everything was outstanding. The crab dumplings were especially delicious, while the pot stickers were some of the best I've ever had. The staff was friendly and efficient too.

I ordered the orange chicken, which cost $16 for what you see in the photo. This is simply outrageous for the portion size. Additionally, most of the food seems to be frozen and just reheated. The staff were not friendly at all. For this price, you can find much larger portions and better service at other places. View menu

I wasn't very impressed by their braised beef noodles (extremely skimpy on the bok choy and beef, which weren't very good, watery soup), and they got an order wrong and brought out two of the same dish. Unfortunately, they were out of two types of soup dumplings in the early evening, and I wouldn't go back to try out more. I'm not sure why they're suggested so frequently...

The food is average. Some of the dishes seem to be reheated frozen food, but that’s understandable since there aren't many good Chinese restaurants in Chapel Hill. I will say it’s better than it used to be. However, the service was terrible. The waitress actually complained about me ordering too much! She didn’t do much in an empty restaurant, and later she added a mandatory 18% tip to the bill. It’s unfortunate that there are no good dim sum options or quality Chinese restaurants in Chapel Hill.

The food at Shanghai Dumpling consistently meets high standards, and I’ve never been disappointed. However, the pricing is a point of concern. I've noticed that over the years, prices have risen while portion sizes have decreased, making me hesitant to recommend it to anyone unwilling to spend $20 or more on a meal. For instance, I’ve seen the price of the BBQ steamed buns increase from 4 for $6.95 to 4 for $7.95, and now it's 3 for $7.95. This restaurant was a disappointment, with uninspired and soggy dishes. I regret spending nearly $60 on bland Shrimp Lo Mein, chewy House Dumplings that came without any dipping sauce, and Wonton Soup filled with mushy dumplings. It was evident that whoever prepared my food neither took pride in their work nor cared about the presentation. They even packed everything in a nondescript bag, providing no menu or contact information for future orders. This leads me to believe that Shanghai Dumpling is aware of the low quality of their food, which lacks flavor, and they don’t seem to care. This was my first and last visit. Goodbye.

AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!!! The customer service was appalling and felt deeply rooted in racism. The server didn’t even ask if we wanted takeout or to dine in; he just threw our food onto the table. While we were eating, he approached us and claimed that since we had ordered takeout, we weren't allowed to eat there, despite the numerous empty seats available. I explained that we hadn’t requested takeout and assumed we were dining in. He left and returned a short while later to inform us there was a “dining service fee” if we chose to stay. I believe the 3 star rating of this restaurant is fair and accurate. While the food tasted good and came out rather quickly, the portions are super small and the prices are much higher than the portions could justify. Everything is sized down, even the dinner portions of the entrees. There's a lunch version and a dinner version of the main entrees but the more expensive dinner option is still only about half of what I'd expect a typical plate serving to be. There's a lot of price gouging going on here because they know that the majority of customers are college students not paying attention to the prices.
