"My favorite place to eat in San Mateo, full stop. Outstanding and very well priced Sichuan food thats authentic enough to always be interesting but also be approachable for a more those used to a more western style of Chinese food. The cumin lamb is a must try. Really flavorful broccoli beef. All of the dozen of other dishes I've tried here over multiple visits were also outstanding so you really can't go wrong. Great service who really knows the menu and are always happy to give recommendations. Come here. It's absurd that this place isn't ever full, so capitalize on that for your benefit!"

I really like The Noodle Shop across the lane but they were closed and this turned out to be a great alternative. Everything was still great!Food: 5/5

Great Sichuan food. Been here for more 10 years. I wish their bring back the way they prepare the pork belly and garlic sauce. I don't really like the put noodle.

This restaurant is amazing! The food is both spicy and delicious. The service was exceptional. We stumbled upon this place in our neighborhood and can't wait to come back again. The green beans were particularly outstanding. View menu

Did this place change their recipes? Their mapo tofu used to be hearty, flavorful and numbing, but what we got today was completely different. It was tofu sitting in a thin broth with no Sichuan peppercorn, flavorless compared to how it used to be. Still edible but strongly prefer how they used to prepare it.

We went for lunch. It was a big bowl of noodles, but too much noodle. They tasted really good, but I wish it had more vegetable to balance. The service was great the lady was very friendly, and she swapped the beef for the chicken for me on one of the dishes. The tan-tan noodles were really good, with the flavoring and stuff underneath the noodle. But it was too much Noodle, and too oily.

I recently had the most delicious fish filet dish at this restaurant. I absolutely loved the spicy and garlicky flavor, just the way I like it. Some of my other favorite dishes from this place include green onion cake, cold skin noodle, beef noodle soup, stewed beef with potato, my kid's favorite salty egg yolk soft tofu, honey walnut prawns, and sour yogurt twist pastry. We will definitely be returning to this restaurant soon. View menu

I visited this restaurant one evening to pick up some spicy chicken for takeout. They also included a generous portion of shredded potato salad and stewed beef brisket noodle soup, which was a pleasant surprise. The spicy chicken was indeed spicy, with a slightly sweet flavor that may not be to everyone's taste (I personally find many dishes too sweet). However, the stewed beef brisket noodle soup was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend trying the soup, especially now that the weather is cooler.

I don’t review much anymore but this place is so slept on I want to keep it alive with sheer force of will. By far the best Sichuan in the area, the only peers I’m aware of is in NYC. They are also the only place here I’ve found that does the crispy fish fillet. Their mapo tofu, green beans, and really just everything is excellent. Filled chock full with chiles, herbs, spices. THEY DO NOT SKIMP! And the portion sizes are good. If you like spicy Chinese food, you have to give it a shot. You will like this place.

"Curry Hyuga had long been on my culinary radar, and today, I finally had the chance to experience it. The occasion arose as I needed to pick up my partner at SFO later, and given the mere 10-minute drive from the restaurant to the airport, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to satiate my appetite and make the most of my time, rather than aimlessly circling around the airport. Conveniently, there are numerous public parking lots scattered throughout the town. The restaurant opens its doors at 11:30 am, and I arrived promptly at 11:25 am, only to find a queue already forming outside, as depicted in the photo. The attentive server, Yuki promptly greeted each customer and kept my water glasses filled, setting a positive tone for the dining experience.Opting for their Signature Curry Rice Entree, which features their caramelized onion curry accompanied by shredded cabbage, creamy potato salad, and Fukujin pickles, I decided to elevate my meal by adding Chicken Cutlet Katsu Curry with Chicken Karaage as additional toppings. To my amazement, my order was delivered to my table in a mere 3 minutes, which left me thoroughly impressed. Curry Hyuga's standout feature is their incredibly tender meat, perfectly complemented by their mouthwatering curry—a true masterpiece with Kanazawa-style sweetness and richness that sets it apart. To further customize your dish, they offer a selection of five different spices: Ichimi Togarashi, Jalapeno Pepper, Pequin Pepper, Wiri Wiri Pepper, and Orange Habanero. I had the pleasure of sampling all of them, and personally, I found the Wiri Wiri Pepper and Orange Habanero powder to be standout choices. Their spiciness elevated the curry to a whole new level, complemented by the unique fragrance of the peppers."

"I made reservations here for Valentine's day and everything was perfect! Their service was incredibly friendly and attentive, and with each dish it was cool how they talked about the food and explained some of the tastes and flavors just before we began eating. And they get huge props for accommodating my dietary restrictions and modifying almost every item on their menu to something I could eat! (5/5) Osetra caviar I normally hate caviar, but this one was really good! It's cured so it's a bit salty (4/5) Sauteed baby abalone Pretty good, although it doesn't quite compare to ones I've had in the past. That said, one doesn't eat abalone often, so I think the bar for abalone is pretty high (5/5) Warm lobster salad Wow! The lobster was cooked perfectly and melted in my mouth. Also I thought the charred avocado was interesting; they blowtorch the avocado to give it a slightly tougher texture on the outside, mirroring the lobster (4/5) Braised Lamb Ragu The lamb was exploding with spices and flavor, although it was a tad dry inside. The pappardelle was perfectly al dente (4/5) Black Cherry Sorbet Pretty good, the puffed black rice was a bit hard (one of the pieces was like a rock) but the sorbet was flavorful without being too strong (5/5) Hokkaido A5 Wagyu This was the star of the show. Have you ever had steak that melts in your mouth like butter?? The only problem with this dish is that there were only 2 slices of steak! I wish there were 3! (5/5) Spicy Kiss Passion Fruit Juice They made a modification and gave me a small shot of spicy, fizzy passion fruit juice. The chili had a lot of heat but actually went well with the sourness and fizz of the juice. I would never have though of making passion fruit spicy, but it was pretty tasty (4/5) Cubed fruit stack I don't know what to call this since they also did an entirely separate fruit dessert for me, but it was essentially a Rubik's cube made of watermelon, kiwi, and strawberry, topped with a dark chocolate covered strawberry. (5/5) House made meringue I also don't normally like meringue, but this was like candy and tasted amazing! Thanks Viognier for a wonderful evening and accommodating my dietary needs, everything was solid!"
