"Just got finished making our kids pasta for dinner because we never got our food from this restaurant.Made a 5:30 reservation here with our family of four (two boys aged 3 and 5). The waiter took our order promptly at 5:35 or so, and we got salads 15 minutes later, which were fine, if a little heavy on dressing. Anyone with small kids knows they don 't eat much salad typically so we were waiting... and waiting... and waiting... for our entrees. We noticed with dismay that several tables who were seated after us got their food promptly, but not us. Anyone with small children knows the anxiety of waiting with your kids while they try to remain on their best behavior, telling them to be patient, be patient, the food is coming...? At 6:30, the food still had not shown up. Our waiter mentioned that the kitchen was a little backed up but that our food would be right out . Various people came by to tell us that it would be right out , but still, nothing. We ordered extra bread because we were all starving. After we 'd waited well over an hour, the waiter rushed in with what we thought was our food only to deliver it to the table behind us, who had been seated 30 minutes after we arrived. At this point, our kids were starving, we 'd waited for our food for a ridiculous amount of time, and so we left. We threw two 20s on the table for wine. I have never walked out of a restaurant without paying before but this was truly unacceptable."

"6 Stars. Nestled in the heart of Ames is The Café, a local gem where the ambiance is as inviting as the flavors are exhilarating. Upon entering, one is greeted by the timeless charm of its brick walls and understated décor, promising an experience rooted in simplicity and quality. Our lunch at The Café was nothing short of remarkable. We started with a robust, perfectly seared cheeseburger, its charred exterior giving way to juicy tenderness, balanced with crisp lettuce and a ripe tomato, all sandwiched between a freshly baked bun. The burger was accompanied by a side of house-made chips, delivering a satisfying crunch with each bite. Then, there was the beautifully crafted chicken sandwich, bursting with flavor, nestled in a pillowy bun, and served alongside a zesty side salad that perfectly complemented the rich spices of the chicken. The side of corn salad offered a fresh, sweet contrast that was both refreshing and palate-cleansing.Lastly, the quintessentially comforting mac and cheese was a standout, with a top layer gratinated to golden perfection, revealing a molten heart of creamy pasta underneath. Paired with a side of mixed greens, the dish achieved a balance between indulgence and freshness. In all, The Café in Ames delivers an outstanding culinary experience, where each dish is a testament to their commitment to fresh ingredients and culinary craft. This is a must-visit spot for anyone seeking the heart and soul of local cooking. PROTIP: lots of parking in back. Use the door and go to the front."
