"First, I have to highlight the ambience—it truly is a major draw. Built in 1930 by a man who promised his wife a castle, I should clarify that it’s more of a uniquely crafted house than a castle. It features many rooms, open spaces, and some castle-like elements such as round towers, oak beams, fireplaces, and plenty of woodwork. We drove around to admire the exterior before heading inside, and she was eagerly anticipating the interior's charm. We started our meal with glasses of wine and appetizers. She chose the special, which was a portion of Mahi Mahi, while I opted for the Sherry Bisque, a signature dish at Hyeholde since 1937. My partner expressed some concern about starter portions being too filling, potentially spoiling her appetite for the main course. Thankfully, the portions here are more continental—much more modest than the typical American servings. For our main courses, she ordered the Elysian Fields rack of lamb but substituted the mushroom fricassée with Moroccan lentils; she thought the lentils weren’t as good as the ones she’d had in the Middle East. As a steak enthusiast, I usually go for filet mignon due to its low-fat content, but this time, I chose the 12-ounce prime strip steak since the special was described as having a higher fat content. For dessert, we shared a blood orange tart and crème brûlée. In my assessment of the meal, I admit to discarding some of the steak due to the fat content, though there was also some waste on my plate. Perhaps I should have heeded the server's recommendation for a leaner cut of meat. While they also offered elk, neither of us felt adventurous enough to try it. The portion sizes were quite generous; my steak covered the entire plate and somewhat overshadowed the other items, making it look more cluttered than elegant. The rack of lamb was delightful and more than enough for my partner, as she packed half of it to take home. The desserts were particularly enjoyable, especially the blood orange tart, which stood out as a special treat. Overall, our experience was very pleasant. Both the food and service were excellent, and the atmosphere is distinctive to the area. However, be prepared for a bit of sticker shock when the bill arrives. In my view, there are other places offering equally good food at lower prices, like Ditka's or Monterey Bay, but the atmosphere at Hyeholde is entirely unique. This is partially what you’re paying for, and if you understand that, you won’t be disappointed. It’s difficult to say if Hyeholde offers great value; so much of what you pay is subjective. How much is ambiance worth? Only you can determine that for yourself."
