"This review is a little overdue but I have to give my two cents. I 'm reviewing my time with Tommy B 's based on the first Thursday experience and nothing more. I 've been to Tommy 's multiple times and those trips were much better experiences than the one I had this day. Tommy B 's is a relatively new eatery in the Valpo Square. I was there for Tommy 's soft open and continue to visit on a somewhat regular basis.. I 'll make sure to stop in for a drink or two to celebrate with Tommy on his one year anniversary. Being a somewhat newer place it seems Tommy might be suffering some of the growing pains associated with that. I will say this was not his most impressive night. Tommy B 's is known for exactly that, Tommy B. The guy is hoot to just sit down and talk with, and he 's more than happy to make the rounds and see that his customers are happy. It 's good to see an owner engaging and conversing with his customers. Ambiance is loud to medium-loud with a majority of the noise coming from the bar, which takes up a good 40% of the space inside. Music was a little bit louder than what I would have liked, especially with the very dims lights, which makes it seem like they were going for that romantic vibe. Being that I have the palate of a 12-year-old, I ordered the Mitten Virtue cider for that sweet appley goodness. Little to my knowledge, Virtue specializes in dry ciders and thus I wasn 't a fan. If you like ciders that taste like dry white wine, I 'm sure you 'll enjoy it. After dinner I ordered the Tourist which was a coffee liquor ice cream drink, which pleased my sweet tooth greatly. Seriously, get it if you like the sweet stuff, you won 't be disappointed. On to the food, which is probably the reason why you 're reading this. Again this review is focusing on the specials they had tonight, so I 'm sure today 's offering wasn 't their A-list, much akin to Silver Spoon 's. Everyone at our group ended up getting different things so we could all sample. Margarita flatbread, tempura spicy tuna rolls, and stuffed meatballs were all on the menu tonight, and we wanted to try it all. Much to my chagrin, the wait time was considerably longer than that of Silver Spoon 's but this food wasn 't really worth waiting for. For starters, the Margarita flatbread was lacking. The cheese had a plastic texture and taste to it, and the bread tasted like it wasn 't cooked all the way throughout. It kinda reminded me of the cheese pizza we had in the days of my high school. Just to be clear, this is not a good thing. Having gone to Japan and tasted real sushi it 's hard to compare. Fish definitely didn 't taste fresh, and as one reviewer put it, it can easily be compared to a supermarket sushi. It was like the greasy burger of sushi rolls, or junk food. You kinda like it in that, it 's bad for you, but I 'll still eat it anyway kind of way. Lastly the stuffed meatball, if you can even call it that. 90% meat and 10% mozzarella cheese made up this baseball sized serving. The cheese seemed like a higher quality than that of the flatbread 's, as little as it was, which I found odd. I 've been going to Tommy 's for a little while now, but this night he didn 't bring his A-game. If I could I would give him a 2.5 for this night 's overall experience, but that wonderful old **** makes me laugh, so he earns that extra 1/2 star."

The kids' mac and cheese was no better than Kraft, and honestly, Kraft is better. The chicken fingers were soggy and flavorless, and even the baked potato lacked taste. On a positive note, the lobster bisque and filet bites were good, and our waiter was very pleasant and efficient. However, that isn’t enough for me to want to return.

My daughter, her friend and I chose this restaurant as part of the First Thursday's event around the Valparaiso square. They had the Sushi along with some Upside down Pineapple adult beverage and I tried their Cosmopolitan martini along with a small loaf of fresh and warm baked bread with dipping oil. She said the Sushi was very good and we all contended the drinks. The owner much to my surprise was an old family friend. Very attentive and very sober. The service was also very good. I will be back and looking forward to the steaks.

I just called their phone number 219.286.7166 at 11:55 am 12:05 pm to make reservations for a business meeting on the 28th. The first two times the phone rang I was disconnected after about five rings. The third time I tried the voice mail message informed me the mailbox was full. I'll take that as a sign to go elsewhere; after all, if they can't answer their phones, how can they properly take care of my 4 business associates at our dinner. I just can't take that risk... P.S. I gave them a fourth call and got the full mailbox message again. I'm gone.

This place always left something to be desired.. so often that we don't go anymore. The food has never been memorable, but we gave it one last shot stopped in for a drink. The stench was apparent from the first step into the door. We sat at the bar closest to the door and the smell was worse. We didn't stay to order because the damp, musty odor was too strong. It may have been the peeling and torn carpet by the bar. Everytime we stopped in, the young servers were at the end of the bar taking shots and sipping mixed drinks. I'd get drunk too if I worked there. Bring back Paparazzi! View menu

I want to give this two stars but the service was horrendous. I travel often and I have become very patient. The one thing that is unacceptable is a table getting seated after me and served before me. Two tables were served prior to us even though we had been there long before them. We were out with a friend for his birthday and, after he yelled at the waiter twice, they gave us a piece of cake. That was nice. The food is average fair. Nothing super special. I had the tuna steak which was okay, my wife had the Hawaiian chicken which she liked. The other couple had steaks and neither were cooked to there liking. Overall I just can't recommend Tommy B's.

Average. Had a pound of peel-n-eat shrimp. Good, but cooked a little too long, so kinda dry. The sushi rolls were pretty good. The service was good, until.. I ordered a NY strip mid rare. I was served a steak with a fat vein through the length of it and an internal color of pink to gray. When I asked for a new steak, I was informed that they were clean out of NY Strips, and they offered a filet in its place. (Read: they served a shitty Strip that was pushed aside all night until me). The filet was served up very, very rare. Almost obvious, as if they thought my read on the first steak was invalid. A $32 fail. Lastly, The brussel sprouts w bacon are something to skip. I wanted to like this pl...

I think Tommy B's current rating of 3 stars is low. I respectfully disagree with the reviewers that rated low. I had a good time. Maybe since I went on a Tuesday night the service was better due to less customer demand. When I got there the place was less than half full but people kept steadily coming in. By the time I left I estimate the room was about 75% full. Also, it's a small restaurant so I can see people waiting on the weekends (at least one reviewer complained about the wait). Look, you WANT to go to places that have customers. Beware of places that don't! Enough of that. I had a small fillet, asparagus, mashed potatoes, and a salad. It was good and priced appropriately. Beer. Good... View menu

I'm disappointed to write this review, but I feel it's necessary. We have previously enjoyed the food and atmosphere at Tommy B's, but our experience tonight was unacceptable. The prices are Chicago-level for food in Valparaiso, and the service was poor. We were seated right under a flickering light that was incredibly distracting. When we ordered drinks, I asked for a Pumking, but it was served in a tiny 4 oz glass for $8.00. I sent it back because I refused to pay that much for so little. My wife and sister-in-law were disappointed with the lobster rolls they used to love; they found them too tangy and smelling strongly of vinegar. I ordered the spicy tuna, but it wasn't fresh at all. We ordered some mojitos for $8, which were truly disappointing, and decided to start with the filet bites as an appetizer. If you enjoy greasy, chewy, overly salty meat that seems half-battered, then this dish might be for you. I ordered the Philly roll, while my fiancé chose the stuffed chicken. Anyone with experience in a kitchen knows that a crucial rule is to keep raw meat refrigerated. So, to say my sushi was warm is a polite understatement. The cream cheese was so soft it resembled peanut butter, and the fish had an unpleasant odor reminiscent of something that should not be eaten—that’s not a good sign. My fiancé wasn't impressed with the chicken either, and by that point, we had alr...
