"This review is a little overdue but I have to give my two cents. I 'm reviewing my time with Tommy B 's based on the first Thursday experience and nothing more. I 've been to Tommy 's multiple times and those trips were much better experiences than the one I had this day. Tommy B 's is a relatively new eatery in the Valpo Square. I was there for Tommy 's soft open and continue to visit on a somewhat regular basis.. I 'll make sure to stop in for a drink or two to celebrate with Tommy on his one year anniversary. Being a somewhat newer place it seems Tommy might be suffering some of the growing pains associated with that. I will say this was not his most impressive night. Tommy B 's is known for exactly that, Tommy B. The guy is hoot to just sit down and talk with, and he 's more than happy to make the rounds and see that his customers are happy. It 's good to see an owner engaging and conversing with his customers. Ambiance is loud to medium-loud with a majority of the noise coming from the bar, which takes up a good 40% of the space inside. Music was a little bit louder than what I would have liked, especially with the very dims lights, which makes it seem like they were going for that romantic vibe. Being that I have the palate of a 12-year-old, I ordered the Mitten Virtue cider for that sweet appley goodness. Little to my knowledge, Virtue specializes in dry ciders and thus I wasn 't a fan. If you like ciders that taste like dry white wine, I 'm sure you 'll enjoy it. After dinner I ordered the Tourist which was a coffee liquor ice cream drink, which pleased my sweet tooth greatly. Seriously, get it if you like the sweet stuff, you won 't be disappointed. On to the food, which is probably the reason why you 're reading this. Again this review is focusing on the specials they had tonight, so I 'm sure today 's offering wasn 't their A-list, much akin to Silver Spoon 's. Everyone at our group ended up getting different things so we could all sample. Margarita flatbread, tempura spicy tuna rolls, and stuffed meatballs were all on the menu tonight, and we wanted to try it all. Much to my chagrin, the wait time was considerably longer than that of Silver Spoon 's but this food wasn 't really worth waiting for. For starters, the Margarita flatbread was lacking. The cheese had a plastic texture and taste to it, and the bread tasted like it wasn 't cooked all the way throughout. It kinda reminded me of the cheese pizza we had in the days of my high school. Just to be clear, this is not a good thing. Having gone to Japan and tasted real sushi it 's hard to compare. Fish definitely didn 't taste fresh, and as one reviewer put it, it can easily be compared to a supermarket sushi. It was like the greasy burger of sushi rolls, or junk food. You kinda like it in that, it 's bad for you, but I 'll still eat it anyway kind of way. Lastly the stuffed meatball, if you can even call it that. 90% meat and 10% mozzarella cheese made up this baseball sized serving. The cheese seemed like a higher quality than that of the flatbread 's, as little as it was, which I found odd. I 've been going to Tommy 's for a little while now, but this night he didn 't bring his A-game. If I could I would give him a 2.5 for this night 's overall experience, but that wonderful old **** makes me laugh, so he earns that extra 1/2 star."
