"I've passed by the Pilot House countless times over the years without stopping in. If you’re cruising along Route 154 in Haddam, you’ll recognize it as you turn toward the river and the Blue Oar. This classic roadside spot hasn't exactly been known for healthy options, but when I decided to indulge in some snack shack goodness, I headed straight there. I had heard from a couple of hot dog enthusiasts that this was the place to be, especially for their famous housemade relish. I settled at a shady picnic table with a view of the lush woods and prepared for a taste test on some perfectly grilled hot dogs. I couldn't choose between the HOT and SWEET relishes, so I opted for one of each. The hot was indeed HOT, bursting with flavor, while the sweet was crunchy with plenty of celery, both perfectly complementing the buttered, grilled bun. After 70 years of operation, they really know what they’re doing. They also serve burgers and ice cream, but it’s that relish that steals the show..."
