"Strolling on Mission in the Excelsior can be a rather agitating experience especially around bus stops just because waiting passengers remain lodged on the sidewalk to position themselves for seats. This Vietnamese restaurant benefited from this conundrum because my immediate salvation was ducking in here to avoid walking into the busy street. It's certainly not the best reason to come here nor the only one as I saw they had a pretty robust menu of Vietnamese specialty dishes, some familiar, some not. I must've felt adventurous after my bus stop tag game because I ordered something I never had before, the $13 Banh Khot Thit Nuong which was described as veggie mini pancakes with BBQ pork (photo: bit.ly/3uSgFua).They were really greasy dumplings that looked like mini quiches that were dropped in the fryer including the crispy pork. I was supposed to wrap them in lettuce with mint and shredded carrot and cucumber, but I found them unwieldy to handle. I had better luck with the $8 Goi Cuon Tom because fresh spring rolls with shrimp are foolproof (photo: bit.ly/3j4BX5l). Time to dodge the bus stop again.FOOD 3 stars...the spring rolls were fine but those mini pancakes could've caused a grease fireAMBIANCE 3.5 stars...pretty spacious and quite emptySERVICE 3.5 stars...they did their jobsTOTAL 3 stars...maybe I'll walk on the other side of the street next timeRELATED Exploring the Excelsior?
