"There was recently a TikTok of someone who went to six bakeries in Chinatown in search of the best pineapple bun. During my recent conference in the city, I visited five of them so that we could do our own taste test. To mix things up a bit, I also got BBQ pork buns to do a similar comparison.(I didn 't pick up from the sixth bakery because I have never liked it and not surprisingly to me it came in dead last by a wide margin in the TikTok.)We tasted the pineapple buns and BBQ pork buns separately and much to our collective surprise, New Hollywood came out on top for both.Tasting notes:Pineapple bun moist pastry, fluffy and not dense. The topping was a rich yellow in color, and was sweet and crumbly, just the way we like it. Some of the toppings from other bakeries were decidedly not crunchy a little wet and sticky and not satisfying.BBQ pork bun sweet moist bread, generous chunks of pork (not macerated like some places) and rich in flavor. One of the best that I 've had.Prices among all the bakeries were within a range of $3 to $3.75 for the two pastries that 's the way capitalism is supposed to work when there is a healthy amount of competition. Service was friendly and patient. While I was leaving, a woman with a European accent came in and asked if they had coffee. When the server answered in the affirmative, the customer then said that she wanted a latte, half caf, with a nondairy alternative like soy. The server looked at her with an amused expression on her face, and then after a beat said, yes, we have coffee . Haha!"

My go-to place for silky tofu and deserts. Good quality and friendly staff.

I loved it here, I think I'll go back today. It's cash only, but there is an ATM down the street. The soup is to die for.

This busy cafe offers made-to-order fresh food with quick service and a friendly staff. The atmosphere is pleasant, as the restaurant is very clean and the guests are lively.

This restaurant offers a selection of freshly baked pastries to enjoy with a cup of coffee or to take home and pair with tea. I have heard that their lunch menu is also excellent. Parking is available in a lot located half a block away on Pacific Ave. View menu

We entered the restaurant with the intention of purchasing pastries to take away, but the woman working behind the counter barely acknowledged us before walking away and engaging in conversation with a customer at a nearby table. Feeling ignored and perplexed, we decided to leave.

Local's hot spot. Delicious food, try the black bean cake made with rice flower, or the Mellon cake. The scallion twist is really fluffy and delicious as well as the pork bun. Try them. Service is self serve walk up to the counter choose items and pay. Small little spot set up with tables.

No good for tourists. They don’t speak English. The waiter was very rude when I try to ask something. I paid and when I was in the door she scream to me that i didn’t leave tip. I leve 2 dlls and went. But that money was a gift bc the attention was very bad. The food was regular, without any flavor View menu

This restaurant offers great deals on food, especially their egg tarts which are available in a combo deal at an affordable price. The pastries and baked goods are reasonably priced and similar to what you would find elsewhere. The staff are friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is welcoming and reminiscent of a bustling city block in an Asian country, giving Chinatown its unique charm. It's a place that makes you want to return often and understand why people choose to live nearby. Be sure to ask about their freshly baked goods, as they may not all be on display. The hot items are especially delicious when served fresh.

We ventured to Chinatown to check out the flower market, which is held annually during Chinese New Year. We were told about New Hollywood Bakery and restaurant, so we wanted to try them since we were already in Chinatown. The place was packed and we waited a few minutes till a table was free. I had the beef chow fun and bf had tomato beef Hong Kong style crispy noodles. We also bought some egg tarts that are priced at $3.50/3. I believe the tarts are a dollar more than last year looking at previous reviews. The beef chow fun was about average. I think I needed some vinegar to cut the grease but there was none. Their crispy noodles were really good and definitely stayed crispy! The tarts were...

"Earlier this year Salty 's was featured in one of the top 100 places to eat in the Bay Area in 2022, and after trying it a couple times, it 's easy to see why. Quality and flavor, great customer service, it checks all those boxes. I occasionally visit the 24 hour fitness on Van Ness, and Salty 's happens to be just few short blocks away which makes it perfect when I 'm looking for a post-workout sandwich. And for those that know me, I love me my sandwiches. On my latest visit, I decided to go with the 'Glorious B sandwich, which come with turkey, bacon, avocado, pepper jack, veggies, and garlic mayo. The blend of flavors and high quality of the turkey is no wonder it 's at the very top of the menu list. It 's one of those sandwiches, that you can bring to park and not need a ton of napkins to get through. It was well put together, with the ratio of all the ingredients matching well. Nothing overpowering, just sandwich perfection. The size of the sandwich I thought was the perfect size for my appetite. As I 've gotten older I can 't put down as much food as I used to, and after one-half I knew I could 've stopped eating, be content, saved the rest for later. But of course I ate the whole thing and nothing sounds better than taking a quick power nap right after. I love that their menu has so many different sandwich combinations, so definitely take time to check their menu before calling-in/walking-in to order because it 'll definitely save you some time. On my latest visit, I was in and out in 10 minutes. Definitely towards the top of my list of sandwiches in this part of town!"
