"The bottom line: UNIQUE, UNIQUE, UNIQUE. The food is not only fantastic, but the 1880s house that houses this restaurant is a splendid representation of Southern charm. The owners, Al and Celia McSwain, are incredibly gracious hosts, and their son Chris is a culinary master. They've been running this family business together for 24 years, and it’s a resounding success! We ordered the Pow Pow Shrimp, Fried Catfish, Lemonade Green Beans, Garden Salad with Raspberry Vinaigrette, Cornbread, Yeast Rolls, Deep Fried Oysters, Zucchini Muffins, Turnip Greens Soup, Bread Pudding, and Pineapple Casserole. Everything—yes, everything—was incredibly fresh, clearly homemade, and each dish stood out in its own delightful way. Personally, I always request salad dressing on the side because most restaurants use bottled dressings that don’t appeal to me. However, the Raspberry Vinaigrette at Porches was so outstandingly fresh that I ended up joyfully drenching my simple garden salad in it after just one taste. The Turnip Greens soup was superb and truly original—a creamy creation that could easily become a comfort food if I lived in Wesson. The homemade, daily-baked yeast rolls and cornbread were delicious. The Lemonade Green Beans, an old family recipe, were both flavorful and whimsical. Since the gift shop was out of the Porches recipe book, Mrs. McSwain kindly shared the green bean recipe with me. As for the POW POW Shrimp, just ORDER IT! You need to taste it to fully appreciate it. I’m not an expert on deep-fried catfish, but I did enjoy this dish, and the oysters were also excellent. The tartar sauce was well-seasoned and homemade. Even if you don’t get a chance to chat with the family, take a moment to explore the various rooms on the first floor of the house, which makes up the restaurant. Despite a population of only 1,500, the locals from Wesson crowd this place. When newcomers arrive, both the family and the community take pride in welcoming them. Don’t miss the former sleeping porch, which has been transformed into a lovely atrium with tables. The history of the location is fascinating; after the Civil War, Colonel Wesson moved to Mississippi and essentially established the town by creating Mississippi Mills, which, at its peak, provided jobs for 3,000 people manufacturing fine cotton and woolen fabrics. The comptroller of the Mills did so well for himself that he built the house that is now Porches. This house and restaurant have been featured in various magazines and even had a film made about them. If this review isn’t enough to convince you to dine at this restaurant, just know that I thoroughly enjoyed my meal there. And here’s a little secret: right now, I'm sitting in the French Quarter of New Orleans, fondly reminiscing about my lunch at Porches while enjoying the last of those fabulous yeast rolls!"

If you like crab cakes or fried oysters, this is the place for you! They do not take plastic so don't forget to bring cash.

Love this place. Pineapple casserole is worth the trip. I had the meatloaf which was delicious. The rolls will make you want more. It's just a really neat place. They aren't open a lot of hours, so check before you go. We actually drove from Baton Rouge Judy to eat there. Fun day trip.

We loved it. Wife and I stopped in for Sunday brunch and everything was wonderful. Tried their famous hot pineapple (pineapple with shredded cheddar cheese and topped with crumbled Ritz crackers, then baked) and enjoyed it, along with everything else we had. Definitely will return the next time we 're in the area! View menu

I absolutely loved this restaurant! Just a heads up—they don’t accept credit cards, but luckily, they do take checks. I enjoyed the poppy seed chicken, baked potato casserole, and feta and black olive pasta salad, all served with their homemade yeast roll. It was pure comfort food! I will definitely return (with cash) the next time I’m in the area!

A great place to visit and enjoy good food at good prices. Love the decor and atmosphere here. Each room in this old home is differently decorated with antiques. The lunch specials were very good and all four of us enjoyed them. You must try the pineapple casserole when u visit. We drove from Baton Rouge to eat here and it didn't disappoint. my husband and I will be back.

The wife and I ate here 04/15/18. We had high expectations and were disappointed. I had Catfish which was undercooked and fatty. The sweet potato casserole was average. Turnip Soup was fair, I would not order again. Wife had crab cakes that were average. The cucumber salad was ok not great. Yeast rolls were good. The iced tea was really bad. Weak with weird after taste. Field peas were pretty good. The bread pudding with Almond sauce was very good. I like other reviewers was turned off by the dirty facade, it's a beautiful old Victorian Home that needs a good pressure washing and some painting. View menu

We love taking Northerners here..I've gone many times and the food is incredible. .really you just want to gobble. The yeast rolls...bigger than a fist. A choice of entrees, sides and desserts. .so hard to choose. We asked the chef how he managed to make the food so yummy..butter and cream he said. Of course! Beautiful old house on Highway 51..with the requisite porch to sit on to digest. Lovely porch and garden. But..as another reviewer mentioned, it would be great if the entire old house were Scrubbed! Especially the louvered shutters in the atrium. And steam clean the green carpet near the bathroom. But the food; oh my goodness, the food..no criticism there!

This restaurant is a converted home, and we were welcomed to sit on the porch for our meal. The menu featured a variety of enticing options, including Pow Pow Shrimp, Black Pit smoked ham, Chicken and Dumplings, Creole Catfish, Pork Chops, and several other delicious main dishes. Each meal comes as a three-course offering, complete with a salad, entrée, dessert, bread, and tea or coffee. The kids' meals are half the price of the adult meals, which was a nice bonus. My children and I chose the Black Pit ham, which was served with lemony green beans and pineapple casserole, while my husband enjoyed the Chicken and Dumplings along with black-eyed peas and snaps, complemented by sweet potato ca...
