"Humphry Slocombe is a cool name. The name actually comes from a 1970 's British sitcom called "Are You Being Served? "I last went here years ago and had not returned since because last time was here they didn 't have any vegan ice cream and only had one sorbet that was vegan that was fine yet not great.Fast forward years later to the moment of now. I recently stoped by again and they had two vegan ice cream flavors including vegan cookies and cream and vegan strawberry daiquiri. I am a big fan of cookies and cream and am a teetotaler so the vegan strawberry daiquiri unfortunately has alcohol. My beloved and I stopped by recently. We each got a vegan cookies and cream ice cream cone. It really hit the spot. The base was coconut milk and classic Oreo cookies which are accidentally vegan were in there rounding it out to make it a delicious ice cream. The sugar cone is vegan and unfortunately the waffle cones are not vegan so we went with the former.I suggest Humphry Slocombe keep the vegan cookies and cream on rotation adding another two or three vegan flavors for good merit. The whole thing of a vegan going to a vegan or vegetarian restaurant having too much choice so making it hard to decide what to order. Well at Humphry Slocombe Ice Cream it is opposite for vegans as you only have two choices of two different vegan ice creams and for vegan teetotalers who got the straight edge you have one flavor. The vegan ice cream we had is great will set you back $5 for a generous cone or cup. Great location right near 24th St Mission BART station."

"Maybe it wasthat we had just left Gochi due to a long wait or maybe we made bad menu choices , but Tanto was not what I had expected and not nearly as good as I had hoped. From the Yelp reviews I had expected small Kyoto style Japanese plates like Gochi or Kappo NamiNami, though probably not as good or as fresh. But what we ordered was hearty, heavy, and not that great. Our waiter, who was reluctant to recommend anything, did recommend that we order more than we had planned. We wanted to know if our first three orders would have been enough food, and he said we should get a couple more. This makes sense at a place like Kappo NamiNami where the plates are much smaller than many people would anticipate, but made no sense given how much food those first three items already were. So a better waiter could have gotten us off to a much better start. We went with less fresh and less traditional options since we didn’t get much guidance from our waiter and felt adventurous, but we probably could have chosen better. We got the Nabeyaki Udon $9.50) which was the best of the four dishes we ate and was very large. It has a tasty broth, typical thick udon noodles, flavorful friend veggies with too soft batter, and fish cake. The pot stickers were fine, but pretty typical. We ordered the crab gratin which was heavy on a creamy cheese sauce which managed to be both smelly and bland at the same time. The flavor was all too earthy and a little like spoiled milk. The tomato dish was more similar than we had expected and had a very tasty tomato broth/sauce with hot boiled tomatoes and cheese. The cheese was again unappealing should have avoided cheese all together with Japanese food – lesson learned), but the tomato part of the dish worked really well and had lots of flavor. Let it cool a little though, since it comes filled with very hot liquid. They were out of the asparagus dish we ordered, which gave us the opportunity to limit our all too large order. The hot sake was not one of the better hot sakes I’ve had, but not bad. And the final price of $48 was less than I expected. I’ll give this place one more try after putting together a game plan on Yelp, but I hope its not like this experience again."

The Taste Of Tea

"We did not enjoy our meal here and, in fact, left with most of it unfinished. The food just felt gross and subpar compared to other similar restaurants. Gyoza: $9 for 6 pieces. Instead of the standard, plumpy shapes, their gyoza were more like chips. Incredibly thin spread of meat inside some wrappers. Tea flight: $15 for the most underwhelming, diluted tea, which is bizzare considering we ordered teas that are known to be full bodied. Gyokuro is a highly prized, shade grown tea that is supposed to coat your mouth with umami. Fukamushi is a deep steamed green tea that should taste smooth, green, and sweet. Kyobancha is a roasted tea that should have warm, cocoa like notes. But, somehow, the tea that we received tasted weaker than Ito en bottled tea. For a place that has tea in its name, the teas offered have very little flavor for what should have been quite favorable teas. Chirashi: this $26 entree had less seafood than a regular $14 poke bowl from elsewhere. The tuna pieces looked and tasted like they were pre sliced and stored in the fridge. The squid was in calamari shape instead of a rectangular slice, which also felt not freshly prepared. The eel pieces were small and tasted like prepackaged eel from 99 ranch. Miso ramen: broth from an instant ramen package has more flavor and mouthfeel than the broth here. It had a strange watery vegetable and ginger taste. The noodles were thick and all break into short pieces. The worst offender was the BBQ pork that was Cantonese style chasiu with pink coloring, and did not taste good either. The whole culinary experience felt odd and inauthentic, in addition to the unappetizing flavors. The merchandise on the wall confirmed my suspension they labeled a Manchu style clothing wine sleeve as kimono. I do want to point out that the staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. But based on the culinary experience, I would avoid this restaurant."
