"To begin, I ordered the curry crab firecrackers ($11.95), which surprised me with their size, resembling long cigarillos. They were flavorful and crispy, and the accompanying sauce complemented them nicely, but I felt they were a bit overpriced. For my main dish, I opted for the seafood clay pot ($19.95), which turned out to be more like a noodle bowl than the traditional clay pot I had anticipated. It lacked a good amount of sauce and tofu, which was disappointing. However, the seafood was perfectly cooked, and the bok choy and red peppers were blanched just right with a light sheen of oil. The major downside was the noodles, which led to my mixed review. They looked fine and were tossed in a sweet black pepper sauce, but unfortunately, they were gummy and mushy. This likely happened because the water used for cooking wasn’t heated properly, causing the noodles to become sticky. To compensate, they may have been left in the water longer to cook the other ingredients, resulting in them becoming overly soft. For dessert, I had a slice of blueberry cheesecake ($7.50), which was delightful; the topping was pleasantly sweet and not too tart. My friend ordered the roasted five-spice duck entree ($24.50) and the black and white chocolate mousse ($7.95). I tried the duck breast, which was quite tasty, with flavors reminiscent of Chinese preserved pork belly. Overall, I appreciate this restaurant, but the issues with the noodles did detract from the overall experience."

"There are not many Mongolian BBQ options of the type popular in the 90s and 00s in Austin. This may the be only real one that is not combined with some other type of buffet. At a Mongolian BBQ, you choose all the proteins, vegetables, sauces, and sometimes noodles from a buffet style presentation, and the cook fries them on a huge flat grill in front of you. Kublai Khan is a reasonable take on the concept but there are some problems. There is very little explanation about what to do; after you walk in you are basically handed a bowl and have to figure out the system. Servers may not really speak English. Luckily there are at least some signs in the 'buffet ' area. A more serious issue is that the cleanliness at Kublai Khan is suspect. The buffet area is often kind of a mess with food scattered around. Some surfaces look pretty grimy and everything seems to have a bit of a film on it. When we sat down on the bench in the back, we could see the dirt ground into the fabric. Some of the food prep is a bit iffy, for instance it looks like the mushrooms are not washed and still have bits of dirt on them. I will say that I have not actually been sick from eating there. Out of curiousity I looked up the most recent food inspection score and it was 77. So not very good, but maybe not terrible? Having said all that, when you are finally eating the food is pretty tasty. Of course, this depends a lot on what items and sauces you get for yourself but I have found the flavor to be good. Portions again depend on you to some extent but you don 't get a huge amount of noodles. If you heap up tons of meat in your bowl they will add an extra charge, according to signage which I totally understand and agree with; I don 't like it when people are greedy at these places. I have not ordered any separate menu items so not sure about the quality of the sushi or anything else there. I wouldn 't go there expecting any incredible sushi for sure. If you really want some old style Mongolian BBQ Kublai Khan will work, with some caveats."

"I'm giving two stars because the sushi I ordered here was quite good I got the spicy crab roll and another with salmon and fish eggs for my husband, which we enjoyed. I had never had tempura in restaurant quality and was exited to try it as well as soft shell crab app. The tempura was horribly greasy and the shrimp inside was overcooked, although overall it had good flavor. The soft shell crab was nothing short of disgusting, over cooked over breaded and the breading was panko which i found odd. There was more breading then there was crab and the crab has a horrible bitter flavor. I finished my meal even though I was not satisfied I felt bad wasting it seeing how I spent so much on it and oh boy it was quite the price tag which I was prepared for, I bought sushi and shrimp tempura and softshell crab, what can I say I wanted to try something new and indulge a bit. What I was not prepared for was the gut wrenching food poisoning that was to follow and wake me while I slept kept me up all night and had to miss half of work the next morning, my god I was in pain. Most likely this originated from the quantus amounts of oil the food was cooked in and perhaps the shrimps inside not being very fresh it could have also been the soft shell crab which to me tasted rancid although who knows ive never had it before so perhaps thats just how it is. I understand that's how tempura is made but I've had fried food and not had awful food poisoning like I did eating at the Plum house."
