"The menu was a bit challenging to navigate for those of us unfamiliar with Nigerian cuisine, leading us to pepper Marie with countless questions. She handled our inquiries with grace, always smiling warmly. Here’s what we tried: Jollof Rice, which resembles Spanish rice, was served with a delicious goat meat stew whose name escapes me. We also had plantains, known as Dodo, and a traditional chicken dish, the name of which I also don't recall. One of my favorites was the greens called Efo, made from spinach or green leaves with tomato paste and onions—so tasty with a nice kick!
The white lumps on the plate, which might remind some of Chinese bases, are actually beaten yams known as Fufu. They were a bit odd on their own but fantastic when combined with the green dish or goat stew. We also sampled Egusi, which consists of seeds from the Egusi vegetable. This had a strong flavor and a bold personality, as I like to call it. While I would have preferred it with plain white rice, the combination worked remarkably well.
We also tried palm wine, which had a very fermented smell and taste that felt unprocessed. It reminded me a bit of moonshine. I appreciate having tried it but probably won’t order it again.
One note: we did have to ask multiple times for cutlery and extra plates, which could be a cultural difference. The service was a bit slower than we’re used to, but they seemed genuinely appreciative of our presence, especially considering we were a group of 20. They were so kind and appeared touched by our eagerness to learn about their cuisine.
This hole-in-the-wall spot isn't for those seeking fine dining or ambiance, but the warmth and hospitality were truly lovely. The food was delicious! Our total bill, including drinks, came to about $18 per person, taxes and tips included. My cousin and a friend of mine went back a few weeks later, and I believe they enjoyed it just as much as I did!"
