"Wow! Just wow! This small-town family restaurant, conveniently located between Des Moines and Kansas City right off I-35, is a true gold mine for anyone craving Midwestern comfort food. I asked for recommendations on a Des Moines food page about where to eat between DSM and KC, and Toot-Toot Family Restaurant Lounge came highly recommended. So, off we went! Arriving around 8:00 PM, we found the restaurant bustling with about half a dozen tables occupied. We settled into a cozy little corner booth right by the buffet. I usually steer clear of buffets, but with all the rave reviews and the encouragement from our server, I decided to give it a shot. The buffet offered a chance to try a variety of dishes all at once. My dining partner ordered the two-piece boiled chicken, featuring whole white meat, potatoes with a rich white gravy (more breakfast-style than chicken-style), and homemade coleslaw. Let me tell you, those chicken breasts were massive! Just one would have easily sufficed for dinner. The chicken was incredibly moist and flavorful—quite the contrast to the typically dry chicken breast I’ve had elsewhere. I snuck a piece of dark meat from the buffet to taste, and it was equally juicy and delicious. The buffet allowed me to sample various items. I enjoyed the freshly cut, bone-in ham, which was delicious, and the pork chops were fantastic. The salad bar was simple but fresh, with plenty of topping options. I did find the chicken fajitas a bit bland; the onions and peppers lacked flavor, and the chicken was quite mild. I didn’t get around to trying the loaded baked potato or beef taco, but I did sample enough items to get a good sense of the buffet offerings. Overall, everything was great, except for the spaghetti sauce, which I found to be overly sweet. The potatoes were definitely fresh, and the brown gravy tasted homemade—not a hint of packet flavor. Just as we were feeling stuffed, a friendly granddaughter of the owner came to check on us and insisted we try their desserts. She kindly offered us a sample plate from the buffet, and despite our concerns about portion sizes, the samples were anything but small! We enjoyed every bite of their homemade desserts, which were fantastic, but we were definitely ready to roll out of there! If you’re a fan of spicy food, be sure to ask for their special hot sauce, which has a delightful smoky flavor reminiscent of burned jalapeños—similar to Lola’s in the Des Moines area. It provided just the right kick to my chicken fajitas. I also couldn’t resist buying a Toot-Toot T-shirt and some blackberry gel. I had no idea how spacious the restaurant was until I ventured into the restroom after our meal; there’s a huge area in the back! While we were dining, a large party came in and filled that space. The service was exceptionally friendly—true Midwestern hospitality! I know this place is technically in Missouri, but it felt just as warm and welcoming as Iowa. I can't wait to explore more small towns in Iowa and discover additional gems like this one. Each delightful experience at Toot-Toot makes me eager to return the next time I'm headed to Kansas City. It's definitely a worthwhile stop, especially when the road ahead seems long and unexciting. We briefly considered stopping at a casino, but with so many enthusiastic recommendations for Toot-Toot, we couldn't pass it up. We’re so glad we chose to dine there!"

"So we'd had food delivered from here before and it wasn't great. Going in to eat was an almost completely different experience. Instead of being overcooked and hard, the fried bacon was crisp and tasty. The chicken tenders were good they didn't have that overcooked rubbery texture. The fried mushrooms were really good. The french fries were still meh. I think I won't order those again. My husband pointed out that they are likely better with some of the toppings that were available like chili and cheese. Probably. Will I try it? I'm not sure. The chicken tenders were very filling so I'm not sure I really need a side. They have a bar but there wasn't a bar menu available. I asked our waitress for a general drink.... I want sweet, maybe tropical, and a decent size. She brought me a white sangria that was very, very good! Our waitress, Brittany, was upbeat, friendly, and very knowledgeable. Others came and checked I is throughout our meal also. Top notch staff! The atmosphere was relaxed but the place could use a makeover. No. Really. I think the floors are concrete which isn't the issue. The paint on the floors has come up some. The booth we sat in was spacious but a little hard. There are some random types of tables. It's a little dark. If you're looking to take a date there, make sure it's a very casual date. Still.... overall, I rate this place as 4 stars because it wasn't perfect, but it was good. 100% we will go back again sometime. 0% chance of us ever ordering delivery through Door Dash from there again. Seriously. Go eat there. Don't order delivery."

"NEW UPDATE TO REVIEW AS OF 6/6/22: The Manager Martene called and was very professional. He understood the issue and immediately spoke to staff to rectify the last incident on 6/5/22. He also recognized we are long term patrons with Soulman's, and he remade our entire order. THANK YOU, MARTENE! ? UPDATE ON 6/4/22: FLIES IN FOOD and CONDIMENTS! RUDE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! UPDATE to my former review: I want to bring to your attention an event that transpired at the Mesquite location. Check #247 was my order. The server was line cashier #2. While I placed my takeout order the staff line was aloof and the line server ignored many of my questions. She left my order exposed, and flies were in the container and on the bun. When brought to her attention, she said she only saw the flies on the bun, and would replace that only. In turn, I asked my order to be remade. She took the original order, and slammed it in the trash in frustration. I informed the cashier, and she informed the server to close the lid on the 2nd attempt. The server did not do as instructed. She also failed to include BBQ sauce on the 2nd order. The line was dirty, and the condiments (pickles, onions, etc. had flies around them). I have been a loyal patron at this location since 2016. I cater every holiday, and even spent hundreds of dollars for an graduation event for my daughter. Note: the local manager (Martene) was not on duty. The incident occurred around 8:13 p.m. on 6/4/22. My order was: (1) two meat plate, (1) half slab, and (1) pulled pork combo. Hopefully, Soulman's will speak to and properly train staff during the evening hours. The location is totally different (vibrant, friendly) in the afternoon, but changes drastically during the evening hours."
