"Stopped into Hoku this evening on a whim to pick up some dinner. I've heard pretty good things about this place and always love me some Hawaiian BBQ, so thought I would give Hoku a try. I ordered a 2 item combo with chicken katsu and fried shrimp. A lot of food enough for two meals! Came nicely packaged with a neat baggie of utensils, napkins, and yummy sauces soy, SIRACHAAA, katsu sauce, and some type of creamy sauce for the shrimp. Katsu was pretty good and I really liked the sauce. Fried shrimp was not too shabby and the sauce was good I think a housemade sauce? Steamed rice was cooked perfectly and the Mac salad is smackin'. Some steamed veggies cabbage and carrots under the meats and those were good, too! I really enjoy Hawaiian BBQ and it's hard to find a good spot here on the mainland. This place is pretty good to fix a Hawaiian BBQ hankerin'. I saw they had a lot of other good looking stuff on their menu I'd like to go back to try fried rice, gyoza, lumpia, musubi, rice bowls, and ramen! I was also excited to see all the drink options they have Hawaiian Sun juice drinks, flavored iced teas and lemonades (yummmm), milk teas, and smoothies! Definitely coming here next time I am wanting a refreshing drink; I can't wait to try some of the flavored teas. Some tables inside to dine in. Staff was efficient and polite and I didn't wait long for my food even though I was a walk in order. The restaurant is located in the back of Geri Towne Shopping Center near the old New York Pizza Kitchen. Plenty of parking. I'll definitely be back!"

"This was a spur-of-the-moment stop to get some quick grub before an evening at Glen Ivy. Didn't bother to check reviews (which I normally do beforehand) since we really just wanted to get a cheap bite to eat. I've seen Maui Hawaii Barbeque many times before, as it sits near my bank. This was my first time here and honestly, it wasn't bad. Reading all the bad reviews kind of made my stomach churn just a little, but most seem to complain about the timing of the food coming out. I concur. The place is dated and could use a good re-vamp to spice it up. I ordered the Fish Sandwich, and a Pineapple Smoothie with Boba. My friend ordered a Teriyaki Chicken Bowl before me and it came out within about 5 minutes. For whatever reason, my Fish Sandwich took a good while to come out. I must have gone up to the counter at least twice and it still wasn't ready. There was one other party seated and already halfway done with their meal, so I was baffled at how long it was taking. There was only one cook from what I could see, and he seemed to be taking his time. The petite lady who ran the register was nice. When my sandwich was finally ready, she brought it out to me on a tray, along with my smoothie. The sandwich itself was pretty damn good if I must say so myself! The fish was nice and hot, and it was a very good size. The smoothie was not the best I've had, as it really just tasted like a bunch of frozen pineapple chunks were blended together with ice and poured into a cup of boba. Bland and blah, but I was not expecting it to taste great coming from a place that specializes in Hawaiian fast food. Ended up ordering another Fish Sandwich for a friend who was running late, and came to join us. Funny that her sandwich came to us in about 5 minutes, compared to my wait of about 15 or so. She had no complaints either. Overall it's a solid 3.5 stars for me. Good customer service, and easily accessible near the 15 freeway with an open parking lot. If I had to come again, I would, but I'd hope the cook steps up his game. Maybe he was in chill mode since it was a Sunday afternoon, but we were in a little bit of a time crunch. Other than that, the food is good but some of the prices are high imo. $6.39 for an order of 2 Spam Musubi??? You can buy a can for around $5 or less and have at least 8! Oh, and if you need to use the restroom, you have to ask for the key which is attached to a spaghetti ladle! Don't lose it, lol!"
