"There were three of us. An LAPD Sr. Lead Officer, a representative from the Los Angeles City Counsel. The Officer has a limited time therefore had only a glass of water. The waitress was the antithesis of the service and demeanor that has always been a hallmark of The Hamlet. She was rude, pushy and unreasonable on EVERY level. The Officer and the City rep asked only for water. I had an Arnold Palmer. The server gave us menus. We explained that after he left we two would order. That didn 't deter her from returning every few minutes to ask about our order. Perhaps it 's relevant to say that when we arrived there was ONE party of two in the entire restaurant. ONE. So it wasn 't like there was a line out the door for lunch. For the better part of a year I 've been having lunch at 1pm EVERY WEEK. And there 's NEVER been a line of guests waiting for seats. NEVER. Moments, I mean less than a minute after the Officer left the waitress returned, asked for our order and told us, make that lectured to us that we couldn 't sit there unless we ordered. Without raising my voice I told her she was rude and pushy. That he had said that once the officer left we 'd order. Then she took a different tack. She said she was just checking back to see if we were ready to order. Ready to order? after the Officer was barely in his patrol car outside your front door. I told her to look around and tell me if property were waiting for tables to be available. Of course there weren 't because it was a typical Wednesday lunchtime at the Hamlet. 40, 50 maybe even 60% but absolutely no more. A few minutes later she returned, we ordered pea soup and cornbread (my all time favorite soup whether at a Hamlet or at the now departed Kate Mantillini 's on Wilshire at Doheny). The City rep and I commented to each other how ridiculous the scenario had been. The bill was paid and we left the table. Perhaps she was having a bad day. We all have a bad day but that 's no excuse. Your thoughts?..."

"We cannot in good heart recommend this place to anyone that appreciates cleanliness and good service. DO NOT EVEN CONSIDER this restaurant unless there is a management change. I have never written a review before, but I was so disturbed by the treatment we received that I felt it was my obligation. We came to this restaurant for a birthday brunch and called ahead to see what they offered as a birthday dessert. They told us they did not provide anything complimentary, but said we could pre-order, and they would put a candle on it.  They then gave us an option and presented it as if it was the only dessert available without telling us that it was one of the most expensive on the menu. That was not a pleasant surprise when the receipt came, but it was due to bad communication, so we understood. Overall, it was a horrible experience for everyone in the party. Dishes were essentially all dirty, and we had to ask for new ones various times. While the food was good and our server was sweet the manager's service was completely unacceptable. We requested to speak with him to mention the problems we had, and he was incredibly defensive, raised his voice at us and explicitly said he was not apologetic. He admitted himself he was defensive as well so it was not a matter of perception at all. Although we were getting increasingly upset, the members in our party speaking were nothing but amicable and controlled in tone and volume. However, the manager was disrespectful to the point that he told us we were patronizing him as the "adult" and walked off leaving us mid-sentence. The manager might not have been in the best of moods, but his behavior from the beginning was unprofessional and left us feeling as if it almost had to be racially charged, unless he has some superiority complex, because his confrontational energy was completely out of place to ours. To add insult to injury, after he stormed off no one came for the check until we asked after waiting at least 20 minutes. The restaurant was fairly empty as well, so there was no real reason for the delay. We understand getting negative feedback is not ideal, but it should be taken seriously as it can only make the establishment better, especially if it concerns improved communication and restaurant hygiene."
