I would have been perfectly fine if I hadn’t expected a freebie from a restaurant that usually doesn’t provide one. It was my own high expectations that spoiled the experience. It’s like when kids believe in Santa Claus; if they find out he’s not real, they’re devastated. From my own experience, I know that if they’d never been told about Santa, there’d be no disappointment. They might even appreciate their parents more because they receive gifts every year without expectations.
So, in a way, not getting a fortune cookie didn’t actually make me sad. I think my disappointment stemmed from knowing they existed in the first place. In the future, instead of expecting a fortune cookie every time I come here, I’ll just be pleasantly surprised if I do get one. In any case, the food I paid for was so delicious that it helped me forget all about the free cookie I didn’t get."
