"Updated review from 2023: Since our first visit to this restaurant in 2019, we have returned each year following. They added Ooen Table for setting reservations and we've not had an issue getting a seat since. I would still recommend booking at least a week in advance, especially if you intend to dine on a weekend. The food has always been good and they handle those with gluten sensitivities very well. That is the number one concern for my wife. Everything else is trivial in comparison, but having said that the atmosphere is warm and cozy and the staff are pleasant (and numerous). The attention we received was adequate though I was a little surprised that our server did not offer to open our wine or offer a bucket of ice. That has not been the typical case here in the past or at any other fine dining restaurant in Cape May proper. Was that a big deal? No, of course not and it could just have been an oversight or an indicator of how busy they were. Regardless, we will see Sapore again next year! Review from 2019: We couldn't get to a live person on the phone. We called 3 times within an hour between 4 and 5 pm and each time the call was forwarded to some other number that had no greeting indicating it was for the restaurant. Very bizarre. Anyhow, we decided to just go and see if we could get a table. Alas it was booked until 8:30 which was too late for us. We opted to order takeout and it actually came out fairly quickly. The food was very good. I had linguine alla vongole and my wife had the sapore Italiano (gluten free pasta due to allergy). My wife did not get ill which means they did a good job avoiding cross contamination. Kudos for that! We'll certainly be back, but only if we can actually get through on the phone to make a reservation. Dietary restrictions: Gluten sensitivities are handled well here"

"My girlfriend and I were being spontaneous in Ridgewood trying to find places to eat for date night. She was in the mood for some Italian food and the first place we went to had rejected us because we didn’t have a reservation. So we googled other restaurants nearby and ended up walking over to La Lanterna. I did not realize they also required a reservation but understandably, it was a busy Friday night. So as we got ready to walk away from our second restaurant of the night, the owner (I think) Ms. Joanne (I hope I spelled your name correctly) said, “Actually, we can seat you guys at one of the reserved tables but you just need to be done by 7-7:15 before the reserved party comes.” That gave us almost 2 hours to sit and eat so I took her up on her offer because I did not want to walk back outside in the cold again. The vibe of the restaurant threw me off because I didn’t realize it was a “fancy” restaurant. However, she and her crew really gave us great service and made us feel cozy. I got the linguini which was super creamy and delicious. My girlfriend got the salmon. Both meals were spectacular. We made sure to be out by 6:30 so they could prepare our table for the reserved party coming in. On my way out I made sure to thank the hostess/owner Joanne who was super kind to us for letting us sit and eat when she could have easily turned us down like the previous restaurant. The food, the workers, and the ambiance were fantastic. I also noticed how Ms. Joanne knew all the customers names who came in and greeted them so nicely like they were real life friends who were regulars at her restaurant. I shared a short conversation with her at the end before leaving and she gave off mother/grandma vibes, she is an awesome lady and I will be back at this excellent restaurant. Thank you for the night!"

"When we arrived the restaurant was empty, appetizers came out quickly. 3 out of 6 plates were brought out, the rest of the food was not brought out until 15+ minutes later. We could not get help from anyone in that time, no one would look at us. Not the hostess, food runners, waiter. Half the table was finished eating before the rest of the food was brought out. Once we finally got our waiters attention and asked about our food, another guy brought it out. A bald guy with a beard wearing a beret brought out our food with the biggest attitude it was crazy. When he set it down, someone at our table said It 's not cold is it? and the guy goes off saying why would I bring you cold food?! This isn 't Olive Garden (FYI Olive Garden would never do this). He also said the kitchen lost the ticket while raising his voice but that turned out to be a lie. He was not apologetic in the SLIGHEST, it was insane. The food WAS cold and the waiter told us the food had been sitting and no one noticed. We asked our waiter for a manager and he said she wasn 't in, the waiter was extremely apologetic and nice. No one was in the mood to eat after that. He (waiter) gave us 2 tiramisu 's (1/2 the table doesn 't eat tiramisu) and comped $67 worth. We still tipped over 20% off the original bill amount. The service was still bleak after that, we needed boxes and managed to ask the hostess and she said she 'd grab us boxes and then went to the hostess stand and just sat there.... We 've been multiple times over the years but this was such an insane experience that I don 't think we 'll ever come back. This is depressing considering no other place has delicious baked to order focaccia."
