"My review is based on expectations of a one Michelin star restaurant. Firstly, we were kept waiting 45 mins for our reservation. As the bar was packed there was nowhere to sit or get a drink while you waited so we had to stand by the door. No-one offered to hang my jacket. After 30 mins they did bring a complimentary glass of champagne, but nothing for my minor son. After eventually being seated, the food was below expectations. we ordered the caviar which was spoiled by being served on deep fried bread that was too oiled. We had to scrape off the caviar to be able to taste it above the grease. My appetizer was tuna tartare. It was almost flavorless and disappointing. My son had the ravioli and husband the fruit based salad. Both ok not stunning. My main dish was lobster. The lobster was small but good, however the accompanying gnocchi had a sauce so overpowering it did not compliment the lobster at all. My son's NY steak was cooked perfectly but rather tougher than the Prime cut we enjoy at home. My husband said the Beef Wellington was ok but nothing special. The desserts were all chilled and pre-made. I like to have a choice of warm dessert, but there was nothing and you could tell all had been sat in the refrigerator waiting. On making the reservation we had been asked was it a special occasion. We noted it was my birthday, and whilst I did not expect a fuss, there is generally some acknowledgement when they have gone to the bother of asking. Overall, we will not be back. Sadly, we do not think Selby's is worthy of a Michelin star."
