"During a recent trip to Whidbey Island, we visited both Island Cafe locations - this one and the one in Oak Harbor. When I'm on vacation, I always look for a restaurant that serves a delicious traditional American breakfast, and this place does a pretty good job at that. The restaurant is clean and welcoming, located on a downtown street corner with a charming seaside town atmosphere. We were promptly greeted and seated by a new, eager, and enthusiastic young woman, and our experienced server was friendly and pleasant. After looking through the extensive menu of diner favorites, I decided on a ground chuck steak cooked medium, with hash browns, two eggs over easy, and white toast. My companion opted for a veggie omelet with a side of sausage patty. The food arrived quickly and met our expectations. The portions were generous, the hash browns were flavorful, and my eggs were cooked just right. The ground chuck steak was likely of the food service variety, but it was well cooked and I enjoyed it with some A1 sauce. According to my friend, her omelet and sausage patty (which seemed to be frozen) were decent, but not outstanding. The total bill for both of us was a bit higher than expected, but still reasonable for the meal we had. Overall, the breakfast was satisfying and better than what we would have gotten at Denny's or Shari's. I had hoped for the food to be a bit more unique or memorable, considering it's a locally owned establishment, but for a typical diner breakfast while traveling, there's really nothing to complain about at the Island Cafe."

"If I could give 0 stars I would, I had such a terrible experience here on my birthday of all days, we went in understanding that they were down one oven which was okay, but In the end it wasn?t. We waited two hours for our food just to be compensated with frozen brownies and half off when we should have just paid for appetizers since what was all we even got in a reasonable time. We didn?t get enough plates or silverware from our server, and we had to continuously ask for things, which at first we brushed off as just busy but the restaurant itself only had two or three tables actually seated. Worst part is the entire time my family and I are waiting for our food we can see NUMEROUS and I am not talking 2 or three we are talking AT LEAST 15-20 togo orders (small ones for that matter ? being sent out in the THREE hours that we sat there waiting for our food that in the end we just took and left. And I get it, I also work in the food industry and I was even a server but this was such a disappointment and the whole establishment should have done better. Not once did the manager come over to check on us until we called her over and our server didn?t chat or check on us, dirty and empty stacks (because yes I stack my empty dishes to make their lives a little easier of dishes were left at our table, we would have empty cups. We had missing food that didn?t even show up on the bill and had to wait EXTRA just for them to cook it. The whole experience really sucked especially since it was my birthday which no one asked about and I know hostesses are supposed inform the servers about those ? we will definitely not be going back to this one or any other for that fact and don?t recommend.. this was messy and very disappointing."

"I 'm not sure what to make of this place. It 's in a little strip mall in a somewhat sketchy part of town. We went in and were immediately seated at a table, but we were the only ones in the restaurant at a table; everyone else was around the bar, which covers about 1/3 of the restaurant. We stayed around 2 hours, and for almost all that time, my date was the only female customer in the entire place. I thought that was odd. It was about 25 guys, and then her. Later one other woman came in with a husband. The men at the restaurant skewed much older than I had expected; quite a few gray-haired, balding guys wearing big gold chains. Not really my type of crowd; the others were somewhat younger guys wear baseball caps and the like. Perhaps it 's my imagination, and perhaps because she was the only female there, but it seemed as if a lot of men especially the older ones kept glancing at my date, which made things a bit uncomfortable. Based on the restaurant 's name, I was expecting something a bit more upscale, like maybe a gastropub, or something more classy. The food was actually ok, better than the ambiance would suggest, and was reasonably priced. The drink list was just ok, but not exceptional in either selection or price $4 for mid-level draft beer was the weekday special that night. Unfortunately, the menu they have posted online was not the same one in the restaurant. We had already chosen our meals beforehand based on the online menu, only to discover what was actually available differed e.g., no flank steak as the online menu suggests ; on the other hand, there were several Greek items e.g., gyro not listed online. The waitresses were nice and helpful, though we did wait a bit toward the end before being offered a check. Definitely not a place for a romantic meal or for a group of young people. Perhaps will be ok to watch a game when football season arrives, as they have a fair number of TVs around the place, like a typical sports bar."
