"This was our first time at Spanish Tavern, and with all the options available in Newark for great Iberian seafood, it was a challenge making a decision. We arrived in the Ironbound 5 minutes late (Devils game that night: be advised that rush hour can be slow , but there was a parking lot directly across from the restaurant with a pleasant and helpful attendee (you park the car yourself . The host greeted us quickly and seated the three of us promptly. The waiters who attended us were kind and professional gentlemen (old school: they didn't hand out menus until we all were seated, didn't interrupt our conversations at any point; I like that . We had 3 appetizers (be aware: two would be plenty for three hungry adults : croquettes (magnificent perfectly cooked , baked clams (also well done , and chorizo (delicious, but to be fair, chorizo is easy to do if you're using high-quality meat, which they were . The food was top notch. Paella may seem like a standard Spanish fare, but most paellas I have had were mediocre. A place that honors paella recognizes that you don't throw all the seafood in at once so that the shrimp and scallops get overcooked, for example. Instead, everything here was cooked to perfection. Two of us had paella marinera, while one had the rice-encrusted fried shrimp (which was good, but fried shrimp is easy to get good, as long as you don't overcook it . We were full by then, but having such a good meal, we thought we'd check out desserts. Creme brûlée was spot-on; flan was exceptional (not very sweet, with a very charred sauce; if you want yours sweet and caramelly, skip this because it leans into deep flavors ; but the chocolate (fudge? cake was just about the best I've had (dense and chocolatey, with no hint of dryness that large-crumb chocolate cakes get. Throughout, as I hinted at above, the wait staff was exceptionally good, and not just friendly, but professional in the European tradition. From top to bottom, a high-quality experience"

Double D's

"We didn't know about Double D's until we saw an article in Florida today, so we thought we would try. My wife loves tri tip and there are not many BBQ joints that offer it. Turns out Double D's offers it!! We started with two appetizers hush puppies and roasted cheese curds. Hush puppies were perfect. Very sharp outside soft inside. Cheese curds were also simply killers! Besides the Trispitze, she had the Mac cheese and a salad. I had a combination of cut pork, St. Louis ribs and Brisket, plus frits baked beans. I begin to say that if you let this place starve, it is your own fault!! Not only the food is excellent, there is a lot of it. Much more goes into good BBQ next to smoking the quality of meat, spices, etc. play a great role in the end product. Double D does everything, and then some. What I noticed above all was that the taste of the meat was simply excellent. The smoke added without overwhelming it. You also have a wide selection of sauces on the table, but also have a sriracha hot sauce when you ask. I tried, it was just killer big heat and taste. As far as the service goes, it was also excellent. Our server that is randomly one of the owners took the time to chat in addition to stellar service. You really do things right at Double D's. Eat that exceeds a very fair price, plus enough to make a second meal! We told them we were back like the terminator! If you like big BBQ, do yourself a huge favor and stop by. Ask Grace that she treats you like family!"

"Krispy Cones in the heart of the Berkshires is more than just great ice cream options. It 's a local feel good stop that offers an assortment of things: hot/cold food, 24+ flavors of ice creams soft/hard, a playground for children of all ages to sit back and relax while experiencing a taste of something familiar or new. Not being a local, but relaxing to take a hike or ski vacation in the area, this is a true treat to schedule in. On this most recent stop late end of the night stop of mine I was excited to order up some soft vanilla with peanut butter cups in a small cup all whipped up... Blizzard or Friendz style i suppose some would say. In addition to snatching something similar for my sister in law. Upon returning to my car to eat it since it was sorta chilly, I noted on a turn of the key...no start...Ahhh no way!!?! A dead battery it had to be...so ice cream sitting in the cup holder waiting for me to enjoy i quickly popped the hood to check it out being prepared to call AAA for a jump...but wait...owner of Krispy Cone John to the rescue! He pulled his truck over and whipped out his jumper cables and connected and viola! Thank Goodness it started right up and I knew I could at least get it back to the rental to then decide my options on where I was going to score a new battery locally. Not being from around here, no worries John not only got my car started and stomach filled with great creamy ice cream, but a tip on where to go the next day. All in all a great local business owned and run by a stand up fella that i recommend to all because not only do they have good eats at good prices, but is run by good friendly stand up people who truly care. Thanks again, I will be back again and again for sure, remembering all the epic moments!"

Bear Creek Cafe

Bear Creek Cafe

98 White Haven Road, Bear Creek I-18602, United States

"Fresh fare in room with a view. You might know it by its sign. Or by its signature glazed green coffee mugs. Both contain two little bears, dining at table together, looking as if they’re about to make a happy toast. Nope? Then you’re missing a hidden treasure, tucked away in bucolic Bear Creek Village. Open only for breakfast and lunch, Bear Creek Café has to be one of the cutest, most peaceful places in all of NEPA, we dare say, to enjoy an early meal. The first-shift crowd surely will find much to love on a breakfast menu whose entrées include everything from The Papa Bear, Mama Bear and Jolly Bear plates – containing varying combinations of eggs, bacon, sausage, ham, potatoes, toast and pancakes – to creamed chipped beef Chef Rob’s personal recipe), stuffed French toast, a Belgian waffle and assortment of omelets. A Bear Hug and The Yummy Bear round out the morning menu as sandwich options. The first is eggs, cheese and meat in a flour tortilla, and the second is eggs, cheese and meat on a bagel. Both come with country potatoes. We’ve had – and loved – almost everything on this menu before, but our purposes for this visit were to scope out the lunch menu, which we hadn’t yet had much opportunity to enjoy. It’s sandwich heavy as expected), but the options are attractive enough. The signature sandwich is a grilled turkey apple cheddar melt with apple slices and apple butter for $9.95, and that sounded like a great welcome back to almost-autumn, but we were drawn to The Café Quiche and another afternoon item with “bear” in its name. Our two plates were almost studies in contrast, suitable for a mama and baby bear or perhaps a papa and baby or papa and mama. One of us sure looked hungry is my point. By that we mean The Grizzly Bear – grilled chicken or steak) with onions, sweet peppers and cheese Provolone was chosen) on a hoagie roll for $9.95 – was absolutely huge, and half came home. But it also was absolutely delicious, with special points going out to the tasty roll, crunchy on the outside but all kinds of soft on the inside. Chicken was chopped and plentiful – well-seasoned, too – and the cheese was generous, with the peppers kicking in a sweet bite. Multigrain chips, a deli pickle and a daily side made the portion even larger and tastier). The Café Quiche $7.95), on the other hand, was more delicate-looking, a pretty slice from a homemade pie. But it was plenty tasty: creamy and rich but not too rich. “A nice, light lunch,” my guest said, noting the generous cubed ham and mild cheese. Presentation was flawless, too. This one came with a side salad and a dinner roll. Options we passed over but would like to try in the future include the salmon burger $8.95), Southwest Wrap $9.95) and quesadillas $6.95 or $8.95 with meat). Chef salad and a Mandarin chicken salad also are available for the garden-grazers. Both sounded intriguing and would make a nice lunch with soup. Yep, there’s soup. We each had a teeming and hot bowl of beef barley, with our only disappointment being the beef was of the ground variety rather than the meaty, tender chunks we prefer. Still, the broth had plenty of flavor, and sometimes soup is all about the broth. Desserts, if you have the room, change daily, and homemade cakes and pies appear to steal the show. So maybe plan to come hungry. Like any self-respecting bear. If you’re lucky, you might even see one scampering through the scenic grounds complete with a flowing creek/stream, visible through the tall glass windows off the main dining room. Did we see any bears? Nope, and, sure, that’s probably a good thing. But truly we couldn’t ask for a better view. Or a more pleasant lunch.
