"My vegetable vindaloo was phenomenal. Rather spicy, but also flavorful. I felt so much warmth and rejuvenation in every bite. It was unbelievable. It felt like bliss in food form. I didn’t miss the chicken whatsoever, as the vegetables did the job just perfectly. The rice was also warm and spicy. The food also looked beautiful. The vindaloo had a boiling red color that perfectly matched the exhilarating heat. I was doubtful about how good vegetarian Indian food would be, but Samudra didn’t just exceed my expectations, no, Samudra eclipsed all of my preconceptions about what vegetarian food could be. Samudra proved to me that meat’s importance may be overstated, at least from a culinary standpoint. Even without meat, the vindaloo was the most tasty I’d ever had. The spice was perfectly balanced: enough to pack a punch, but still scarce enough not to overwhelm the flavors. And boy, were they good flavors. Did I mention that this meal was $12? $12, for one of the best meals of my life. What a steal. Samudra is why I explore restaurants, to find something brilliant and different, that also illuminates me. Not only was the food brilliant and unique, my dinner at Samudra changed my entire culinary outlook. I once saw meat as crucial, and in fact, I was dreading an Indian meal without warm chicken or pork, but Samudra has changed my mind: vegetarian food can be as good if not better than anything with meat. Adjusted for price, Samudra is my favorite Indian restaurant, even without price, it probably still is. (Although Astoria’s Seva is phenomenal, too. But with price, this food is unbeatable. Not to mention that Samudra is a place I can take everyone: meat eaters and vegetarians. I left Samudra feeling both light, and enlightened. I love everything about Samudra, from the dingy aesthetic, to the expansive menu, to the amazing prices, to the unmatchable quality of the food. Is this my new favorite restaurant? Maybe. "Our family of five (four Indian adults and one American female with a child) visited this restaurant for lunch on a Sunday. The “All Day Lunch Buffet” sign was displayed, and we were seated promptly with cold water served upon arrival. Ambiance First Impressions: Upon entering, we noticed a table with four chairs placed right in front of the entrance door, forcing customers to squeeze between two tables while walking in. This arrangement felt inconvenient and could be improved for better accessibility. Additionally, while the service was efficient, the overall presentation of the serving staff could be improved. A clean-shaven appearance and a welcoming smile would enhance the dining experience and create a more professional and inviting atmosphere. Order Summary: • Thali (3) • Dahi Puri (3) • Bonda (1) • Paper Masala Dosa (1) • Mango Lassi (2) • Corn Soup (1) • Chili Paneer (1) • Thums Up (1) Service Food Quality: Service was quick, and most of the dishes were flavorful and well-prepared. However, the Thali experience was disappointing and could use significant improvement. Thali Breakdown: • The poori served was extremely large and thick, more like a bhature rather than an authentic poori. • The chole curry was well-prepared and met expectations. • The idli and masala dosa were appropriately sized and tasted good. • Both vegetable curries were potato-based, featuring potato white kurma and potato cauliflower fry, which lacked variety. • The payasam dessert was too watery, as was the dal. • Rice, papadam, and yogurt were acceptable. • The sambar and rasam tasted identical, resembling only rasam, which was disappointing. • The thali presentation was awkward, as dishes were served in different types and sizes of bowls instead of a uniform set. Beverage Presentation: • The Mango Lassi was served in a glass jar with a wide opening, which felt out of place. A more suitable serving glass would enhance presentation. Final Verdict: While the service was efficient and most dishes were enjoyable, the Thali was underwhelming in both presentation and taste. Additionally, the restaurant layout needs better planning, and staff presentation could be improved with a more polished, professional appearance and a friendly demeanor to enhance the overall dining experience. "After exploring the major spots in LA, we decided to satisfy our hunger with dinner at Annapurna Cuisine, a pure vegetarian restaurant. Here’s a detailed review of our dining experience: Parking and Ambience One of the best parts about Annapurna Cuisine is the free parking available on a first come, first served basis. The restaurant has a typical, authentic Indian vegetarian restaurant vibe. With both booth and normal seating areas, the place was bustling when we arrived, indicating its popularity. Our Order We ordered a variety of dishes: Hot Chilli Bhaji, Veg Hakka Noodles, Medhu Vada, and Rasmalai. Hot Chilli Bhaji : Surprisingly, the bhaji wasn't too spicy, making it a great option for everyone to try. Veg Hakka Noodles : This dish stole the show. The noodles were exceptionally delicious, enough for two people, and we devoured them quickly. Medhu Vada : If you are a fan of dosas, you should definitely try them here—they are huge and flavorful. Be sure to ask for your preferred spice level. Rasmalai : The dessert was a perfect end to our meal, satisfying our sweet cravings. Service and Overall Experience The service was prompt, and all the items came out well prepared. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the variety of options available. Conclusion For pure vegetarians, Annapurna Cuisine is a must visit. The dishes are tasty, and the overall dining experience is delightful. If we had another day in LA, we would definitely visit again to try more items from their extensive menu. Vegetarian people should give it a shot for sure. You will love it!"
