"Tonight, I decided to have dinner at this restaurant, but the staff completely ignored me. It's a tiny place, and when I finally caught the attention of the woman serving customers, I asked for assistance. She simply replied, "No, too busy." I offered to place a to-go order, and once again she said it would be a one-hour wait. I assured her that was fine, but she insisted she was too busy at that moment. I stood there, feeling like a nuisance for not leaving. Then, a couple—who were Asian—entered, and she immediately greeted them in Korean, took their order, and continued to disregard me.
At that point, I told her it was unfair. I was the only Hispanic person in the restaurant, but that never bothers me because I enjoy all types of food. Growing up in Koreatown, I learned to appreciate Korean cuisine and feel comfortable in their restaurants and markets. My husband, who was in the parking lot waiting for my order, asked what was taking so long, and I told him I hadn’t received any service.
After waiting for 30 minutes without her taking my order and watching her serve others who arrived after me, it became painfully clear what was happening, even without words. My husband wanted to go inside and confront the staff, but I told him it wasn't worth it. We shouldn't stoop to their level of ignorance. Kindness and courtesy shouldn't depend on one's background or language.
This woman's behavior exemplifies the kind of actions that foster division in the world. I appreciate and respect all cultures. Unfortunately, she seems ill-suited for her profession. After all, this is a restaurant—it doesn’t say “Asians only” on the door. One person’s ignorance won’t alter my views on diversity. Was she racist? I can’t say for sure, but racism exists in every culture, and we all must strive for improvement.
This experience didn’t ruin my evening or my appetite for Korean soup. Fortunately, living in Koreatown means there are hundreds of restaurants to choose from, and I ended up receiving outstanding service just across the street from this one!"
