"I visited with a group of six on a Sunday evening, hosting some out-of-town guests. I usually go to the East Village location, which is larger and has a more vibrant atmosphere. For groups of six or more, I had to email for a reservation, and only the Midtown West location had availability. This setting was cozier and quieter, ideal for conversation.
For small plates, I highly recommend the Liangfen of Happy Tears, which is a refreshing mung bean jelly noodle dish dressed in chili oil. When it comes to the mala dry pot, it’s all about personal taste and customization—everything is high-quality and fresh. We ordered 28 items for our group of six, and while they suggest four to six ingredients per person, we found ourselves uncomfortably full! Some standout recommendations are the eye of round or tenderloin beef, quail eggs, lotus root, tofu pockets, enoki mushrooms, taro, and glass noodles.
Do keep in mind that there’s a mandatory 20% gratuity for large parties. After doubling up on some items, our total came to $220 for six people, which is about $37 per person. With winter approaching, I will definitely be back for more of their comforting, mouth-watering dishes!"
