"The following review reflects my experience prior to the shelter in place order currently in effect. I'm sure I'll be hit with a lightning bolt for writing this, preferably in anime, but I have a confession to make: I don't think Japan Center really has too many standout eateries. With that divulged, I can also state I'm willing to take my chances when it comes to my peeps. Especially after this pandemic defines what our new normal will be. But back when the old normal defined our dining standards, Jamie W. and I happened upon Mifune for a reasonably good meal of Japanese standards. Through a couple of remodels, it's been around in the West Mall for a while. Jamie has his favorites and went for the $14.80 Chicken Katsu Curry Rice because who doesn't like Japanese curry and deep fried breaded chicken cutlets (photo: It was a pretty standard workaday meal but definitely checked the boxes. My order was the more elaborate $16.80 Sukiyaki Nabe where they provided pieces of ribeye steak in a soup filled with nabe noodles, fishcake slices, enoki, Napa cabbage, carrot and green onion (photo: For all the bells and whistles, it was not quite the comfort food extravaganza I was hoping it would be but I liked the effort. FOOD 3 stars...solid workaday Japanese dishes AMBIANCE 3 stars...pre pandemic, a comfort food spot, no frills SERVICE 3.5 stars...the servers were polite and dare I say, pretty TOTAL 3 stars...Mifune by any other name RELATED Looking in Japantown? Here's a collection of places I've visited and reviewed:"

"Today 04/18/21 is the last day for the Kabuki restaurant on Kapiolani. I haven't heard any media announcement that they were closing but it's better for their loyal customers to order their last favorites before closing without having to wait in a long line. I work in town but I haven't dined in as much. Just lately, I've been ordering a lot of take out orders, since their Instagram announcement awhile back mentioned their April closing. Their reasonably priced lunch bentos (under $10 and ahi tempura were yummy. I did tried their oxtail soup with tempura combo. There were about 6-7 pieces of oxtail, two big daikon pieces and rice. I loved the ginger and green onion taste in the delicious broth and I got all vegetable tempura. Food was good. Friend said there are not too many places which serve some dishes like Chicken tofu and some other favorites. Today is the last day to get your fix. I will miss the good cucumber tsukemono but since i heard it wasn't made in-house, so I will look for it in the stores. The Kabuki restaurant in Waimalu will remain open, since the restaurant is under a different ownership. Some of specials offered here is a little different from the Waimalu location. Best to call your order in advance if you can get through since it may be only Pauline or another lady answering the phone calls as well as taking in the payments. Parking is in front in the marked stalls as you enter from the King Street They will be opened today for lunch and dinner til 8pm. (Don't wait to the end . They are closed between lunch and dinner. No early bird specials since there is no dine-in. Check to see what's available but they do have specials on the menu board beside the regular menu. The lunch bentos can be ordered at dinner except for the two bentos that need to be ordered a day in advance. Aloha and thank you everyone at Kabuki and Pauline who has been taking my order in the past month. Thank you for for staying in business for many years since 1984 and unfortunately this covid pandemic didn't help with the slow business all the added cost of staying in business to open for dine-in. Sad to see you close and we will miss you! Please Support local! Thanks for reading my review!"
