"Went here Sunday morning. Read good reviews and saw a long line so I assumed coffee was good. Ordered a spooky bear latte and a hot chocolate for my husband. The latte wasn?t hot, I know they were busy but I?d be patient for my latte to come as ordered. My husbands hot chocolate he said was really bad, didn?t taste much chocolate and when we took the lid off to look it was barely darker than just milk. I could tell they were short staffed and I feel bad leaving this review"

We were informed that they stopped serving breakfast a few months ago, so I suppose it’s now just a coffee shop.

Neat place friendly folks! I ordered the townie no questions asked BEST BREAKFAST BOWL EVER! get the fried egg with it! Thank you Anna Second time here! ordered The Grad another awesome breakfast bowl !!! Sunday 10am is a bit busy, but my bowl came quick !

One of the best iced mochas I?ve ever had!! Definitely a favorite spot for coffee in Charlottesville. I also got the omelette with goat cheese and bacon, which was phenomenal. Super filling (felt like 2 servings to me), but incredibly delicious. Would highly recommend.

I have been going to this Grit location for years and it?s usually a great experience. Yesterday, I ordered a ?macchiato? and got a blank stare. The barista said, with an attitude, ?We?ll just make you a latte?, which is not what I wanted. Have never had a barista not know how to make a ?macchiato? ! ?? Ver carta

Super friendly, helpful barista. Had the High Five and it was super tasty. I really only wandered in looking for a drink and a restroom (hard to find on the Downtown Mall , but I really enjoyed my drink (and restroom! so much that I will plan to come back! Right across from the incomparable Magpie Knits, so great location!

No more delicious breakfasts here! I'm really disappointed that they've closed the kitchen. The grit bowls and breakfast burritos were outstanding. This has been one of my favorite spots to eat downtown for over ten years. It was always bustling, so I can't understand why they decided to eliminate the kitchen. Now it's just another coffee shop, one block away from a better one. Such a shame.

"My friend brought me here after a morning hike near by. My expectations were high because my friend had talked this place up. I’m happy to report my expectations were surpassed. This hole in the wall, mom and pop shop is just what the heart desires. Home down soul food with a modern twist. The I ingredients are simple but the orchestration is unique. The flavors and combinations of sauces and textures make this place unforgettable. I had cornbread topped with lean Carolina style pulled pork and chicken mix, covered in homemade pimento cheese sauce, homemade bbq sauce with a side of bbq collard greens. Although the food was out of this world good that’s not the best part. The best part is the owner working as a wait staff. This lady is the nicest person I’ve meet in a long while. She came over to our table to check on us and we continued to have a conversation for 10min. I learned about the history and how she comes up with recipe ideas!! Overall a great place to visit for lunch or dinner. Highly recommend for families or singles on a quick date. Have fun and enjoy this delicious food and family!"

"We were seated on time and placed our order, but then things took a turn. Four share plates arrived within just 2-3 minutes of each other, leaving no room on our table. We were informed that this was due to their small kitchen and that dishes must leave the kitchen as soon as they’re ready. However, I don’t think that’s acceptable; it indicates a lack of proper management. We certainly didn't need all four dishes arriving within the first 15 minutes of sitting down. Isn't the essence of French cuisine about savoring and enjoying the experience? As for the food, the marinated calamari was overly vinegary and barely edible. It was so fishy that we suspect the vinegar was meant to mask that unpleasant taste, which should not be a characteristic of calamari. We received only five pieces of calamari, each no larger than a nickel. The anchovy and fennel special was a hunt for any trace of anchovies, and my husband joked that maybe they were hiding in the calamari to explain the fishy flavor. This was far from the enchanting evening we had hoped for. We left feeling unsatisfied and went around the corner to Frank's Cafe, where we enjoyed a relaxed meal with small dishes and dessert. Our romantic night felt rushed, with our entire dining experience taking less than an hour from the moment we sat down to when we left. Not cool at all."

"A friend was in Charlottesville for business, so we drove down from Fredericksburg for dinner. The food was good, but not remarkable. I ordered the lamb meatballs and the crab cakes. The meatballs were good. The crab cakes had no filler, but I found them to be dry. My wife had the shrimp and grits. The shrimp were good sized, but there weren't very many of them. The grits were done well. For dessert, we had the flourless chocolate torte, which was incredible! The service was very slow. The waiter forgot to put in our appetizer order, despite writing it down when we ordered it. They came out with our entree. We had to wait quite a while for a check, too. "Had a wonderful evening at this restaurant as a couple. The wine selection was fantastic and the service was top-notch. We even decided to tip the kitchen for their excellent execution of the dishes. The only critique I have is that the duck fries on the menu were not exactly what I was expecting, but they were still delicious."
