Restaurant was under staffed. Only one server for the entire dinning room. The meal was lukewarm by the time it arrived.

Very disappointed, it is a different owner, the food was not good, the service was bad, the bathrooms were dirty and no supplies, this used to be our favorite spot in Berkeley, not anymore

The service was so bad from the moment we walked into the restaurant we never got seated and left. Our reservation was at 6, we waited a half an hour and still could not get seated. Restaurant was not clean. The hostess was rude to us and she disappeared for minutes several times while we waited. She sat people without reservations before us.

Spenger's is an INSTITUTION! All of our party went there with our families when we were growing up. But, the evening we were there, we MUST have had a new server. We had to ask for butter, water, wine glasses...and we were given the bottle of wine and told to pour it ourselves. (Again, had to ask for the glasses...and two different sizes were brought out! It just got to the point, where we had to laugh! We know they are going through an ownership change, so we can just keep our fingers crossed that the new managers will work on training the team! The occasion was my Mom's 99th birthday. Spengers was very accommodating. Our server Matthew was absolutely delightful and took care of our every need. The Executive Chef came out and spoke with us as well and he was quite the character and all around fun guy. The food: New England Clam Chowder is outstanding. Several of us at our table enjoyed the Lobster Bisque and it was very generous with deliciously large chunks of lobster. My Mom enjoyed her Parmesan crusted sole and I my Linguini with clams...YUM! that made me very sad: my father took me here when I was a child in the 70s, and I remember that it was a wonderful family restaurant with fantastic eating. Our server was excellent, apologizing for the delay in receiving our drink orders do to short staff. The room is clean and welcoming with our table comfortable. Our appetizer, fried calamari was excellent although it was a surprise to have it have vegetables include in the mix. Well prepared. This is where it went downhill. The Scallops order was incorrect, although prepared well enough, it was the wrong order. This was the better of the two. I ordered the the Cioppino. The dish arrived and was beautiful to look at.
