"John's City Diner is the perfect spot for lunch or dinner The menu is familiar southern comfort but as promised on the menu it's not exactly like your grandma made. Traditional southern dishes are elevated to a new realm. Not for the sake of making them fancy but definitely better. Familiar southern dishes like pork chop, baked chicken, fried chicken and waffles are southern staples but each dish is elevated in taste and presentation that makes them better and makes you want to return and try another entree because everything is so good! Even Mac and Cheese can stand as entree presented in three varieties, it is simply the very best. The prices are very reasonable and the service is outstanding. Although the bar is small in size the cocktails and liquor selection is amazing. A variety of hand picked bourbon and tequila options elevate the cocktails with drinks that are both familiar and unexpected but always delicious."

I am so delighted. What amazing food! Had the mac cheese added grilled shrimp to it. Unbelievable! Also had the frozen lemonade dessert. Could not have been better! Super service from Trudy. I’d recommend this to anyone!

Used to eat at John’s City Diner often for lunch back in the 1990's, but had not been since they reopened after closing temporarily for COVID-19. Love the new decorations, friendly staff and great comfort food a downtown Birmingham classic!

Amazing! Amazing! Fried okra appetizer, chicken waffles, hamburgers, and baked chicken to the bread pudding dessert and the mixed drinks absolutely everything was incredible. Ask for Tony to serve you. He embodies humility and kindness. He loves people and it shows in his impeccable service.

Really good food and nice evening for a Thursday night bite to eat. We had the meatloaf and seared porkcop. For the price of food, the ambiance should of been better. The pork belly starter was tasty but not for the price and portion. 14). In a nutshell, if we pass thru Birmingham again and hungry, we'd stop back.

We arrived at 5 pm, so we were the first evening diners. Over the next hour the booths all filled. The interior has been updated. Thankfully it still feels like a diner — it's the same but different, in a good way. The server was very professional, the food was very good, and the cocktails were excellent. We'll be back. Tony made our dinner special. He was very engaging but not intrusive and his attentiveness made us feel welcomed. Another staff member approached us and recalled waiting on us several years ago before the pandemic. We were appreciative of her recollection. Our food was delicious. We loved the cornbread appetizer, the yummy Cobb Salad, the perfectly grilled shrimp on several dishes, and the meatloaf which stood up to the “famous” declaration.

Stumbled across this gem randomly when plans changed, and thank goodness I did!Style and decor was eclectic and personally gave me a unique urban-type feel. Friendly staff, their cocktails unique and refreshing, and for my first time having chicken waffles, did not disappoint one bit! Portion size was off the charts, I could’ve definitely it : Ended the night with bread pudding, and man oh man, was it delectable! Definitely coming back if I’m ever in the area again!

"If there is a restaurant that is a Birmingham institution among the wealthier crowd, there is literally only one name that locals would bring up, and it is undoubtedly Highlands. Not that there aren't other nice restaurants, but this spot has proven itself over time and is ran by a chef that most Alabamians are quite proud of. Opened in 1982, Highland's is a place that put Birmingham on the map in a positive way at a time when the post industrial iron period was about to wind down and transform the city. Frank formalized his cooking techniques by working in kitchens of San Francisco and France, creating a medley of American Southern and French cuisine that is difficult to find elsewhere. It was not a time when it was common to see a chef from Alabama going to study cooking in Europe, thus the story was already an anomaly. Frank Stitt was trying to pioneer sustainable agriculture and farming well before anybody in Alabama knew what in the world that actually meant or for that matter, cared. One of the signature items is the baked grits that has been around since the restaurant opened. It's a tasty grits preparation and without a doubt, something to try. The pheasant was spectacular, fairly lean and with a crispy delicious skin, served with grits and green beans. Pastries here are created by Dolester Miles, who has been in the job for well over 30 years. The opera cake is absolutely spectacular, gentle and complexly layered. The basque cake is peachy and moist, with a crispy delicious exterior and Chantilly cream. Not only are these likely the best desserts to discover in Alabama, but may be some of the best to be found in America. The attentiveness got derail was clearly evident. As far as service, generally fine, but not particularly attentive. The waitress did not seem in much of a mood to welcome people to the establishment. Many items on the menu were running out by 8:30pm on a Saturday night. Nobody was particularly impressed with the flounder that got substituted for the grouper. And then there are other questions, why would you run out of grits? They know they are always filled to capacity and ingredients to make grits are not immediately perishable. Highland's has by this point in Birmingham's history become a classic. It's evident that most people here have been around for decades working at their jobs and serving the rich crowds of Mountain Brook. It's a place of great food and shows many combinations of ingredients that are nearly impossible to find elsewhere, let alone be executed this well."
