"To begin with, the exterior of the restaurant has a unique aesthetic. While the decor adds some vibrancy to the atmosphere, the surrounding area is somewhat dull, which detracts from the overall ambiance. However, that’s beyond their control, so it’s not something I hold against them.
Upon entering, I noticed it was much quieter compared to my previous visit two years ago. The air felt stale and cold, missing the lively energy it once had. Nevertheless, I received a warm greeting from a server who encouraged me to sit anywhere I liked and assured me she would be over shortly. I was with my grandfather, who is quite traditional, and as we walked in, he instructed the server to bring him coffee right away (which I find a bit rude, but I’ve learned to manage the awkwardness of these situations). The server, still cheerful, asked me if I wanted just one cup of coffee, to which I raised two fingers, and she promptly made arrangements for two cups.
I noticed there were creamers already on the table, with a variety of flavors, which I appreciated as a nice touch. Additionally, they had butter, sweeteners, salt, and pepper available. The server brought us our coffees and menus, saying she would return to take our order. As a vegetarian who prefers to keep things simple, I opted for coffee, while my grandfather chose biscuits and gravy topped with medium eggs. The server excitedly informed us that this dish is called a "dicky." It’s always refreshing to see staff take pride in their menu!
Although my grandfather tried to persuade me to order something, the server was friendly without being pushy, which I appreciated. I had hazelnut creamer and Splenda with my coffee, but switched to the table sugar on my second cup, as I prefer that to artificial sweeteners.
Now, about the decor—the artwork on display was quite abstract and eye-catching, seemingly created by local or amateur artists, but I later discovered that it was actually made by the owners themselves! It’s a fascinating artistic choice! The furniture was also decent. The overall color scheme had a heavy 80s vibe—specifically reminiscent of the more eccentric side of that decade. I could easily envision a scene from "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" taking place here. The chairs featured classic black frames with brown cushions, while the tables had a black base with a brown top. The booths came in three different shades of brown and were surprisingly comfortable, providing excellent lumbar support that made taking notes for this review easy! The booth tabletops had a cobblestone gray finish, which added a nice contrast to the overall aesthetic. My server, Marcy, was friendly and proficient in her role, enhancing our experience.
Our final bill came to just $14.65, making it a decent outing. Towards the end of our visit, my grandfather almost created a scene, but I managed to keep things under control, which was a bit embarrassing, to be honest.
As for vegetarian options, I was pleasantly surprised by the variety available compared to many breakfast diners."
