"This brightly colored old restaurant in the historic Union St. district of Poughkeepsie features an unmistakable large Vegan Options mention in one of the windows, leading me to wonder if it would be an interesting find. Many fillings for items include meat, cheese, or queso fresco. The clearly marked vegan possibilities to my mind included a section with two burritos and the taco section. Other sections did not mention veg subs. I ordered 3 tacos, then one of the burritos, Gaby's Burrito. The 3-taco plate has to be made with all the same filling. Being a vegan, I chose spinach and mushroom, forgoing for example the fajita veggies option. One could elect soft or hard tortillas for the 3-taco plate. The three tacos each came wrapped in two soft corn tortillas. The menu promised cilantro, wedges of lemon, and onion, along with red and green sauces. The spinach and mushroom filling lay at the center of the tortillas. I poured on the spicy sauces, put on squeezes of lime, and used my hands to eat. I had queso fresco left out by mentioning I was a vegan. It is a relaxed meal that was as good as better than street tacos I have had in restaurants in Kingston and Red Hook, for example. I happily realized after downing my tacos, that they are largely an appetizer. I then ordered one of the two burritos in the veg burritos menu section. The burritos arrived. The earlier tacos had been fresh-veg-Mex by comparison. I did not care for the burnt-tasting brown chipotle sauce in the black beans and tofu meat sub. I could not finish my burrito. My waitress had not given me an option of other sauces. I liked the use of separate black beans instead of refried. The salad with the burrito dinner plate contained cabbage and other veggies, but was a bit wilted. The sweet, blackened plantains were sweet and were swept up in pieces at times on my fork with bites of the burrito. The tab was not high for the two dishes combined. I avoided ordering alcoholic beverages or dessert. I found the place authentic and wondered if there could not be more vegan filling options on the menu for, say, the steamed tamales or the enchiladas, classic Mexican dishes I like. Near the Amtrak station in Poughkeepsie. Off-street parking in a small lot next to the building. Mexican decor. I'll be back to this Mexican-food discovery with lunch and dinner hours. "I really wanted to like this place but was underwhelmed. The menu looked really good and my husband and I decided to go this past Sunday based on the great reviews. We called two or three days ahead and were easily able to get an early reservation but they advised they were not having brunch because of the college graduations, which we were fine with. Since we had an early reservation, I had no issue parking in the strip of spaces next to the restaurant. Since it was humid, we dined inside. Our server was fantastic, very attentive, friendly and personable and contributed to the experience. We started out with the burrata crostini appetizer which was tasty. It was actually a nice contrast having a thin slice of slightly sweet apple under the cheese. The scallions were good, but the pink peppercorns on top detracted from the flavor of the dish. I understand the approach for contrast (very sweet fig jam, slightly sweet apple, sweet balsamic reduction, cheese) but I didn’t agree that the peppercorns worked. It was a nice appetizer but nothing I couldn’t recreate myself at home. For entrée, I had the pan roasted duck breast. The waitress asked me if mid rare was OK but the duck came out way overcooked and dry. I probably should have sent it back. Everything on the plate tasted good but the meat and asparagus needed salt (duck was nicely seasoned except for salt and being overcooked, mash was delicious). My husband’s burger was cooked properly but also needed salt. My bohemian passion cocktail was fantastic. There were a lot of interesting flavors that worked well together and made a delicious drink (but I like sweet drinks, and it was definitely sweet). My husband’s Results May Cherry was fine, he’s definitely had better old fashioneds and has had higher end bourbon at home. Overall, there was nothing terrible about our meal but also nothing that would make us return."
