"As busy as the holidays become, and you're craving Birria but don't have the hours and hours to slow cook your delicious meal , you have to go to the next best option that would be here in Castroville! We came in on a Monday right about 6 o'clock. It wasn't too busy we were seated promptly. Our order was taken just as quickly and with all that being said, the food came out, fresh and flavorful and generous portions. Because this location has been a staple in Castroville for years , the ambience of the restaurant has not changed much since the central Texan minus the chips, but that's OK because the beautiful wood finishes are charming no matter what everything was clean and bright and that is always a good sign. We came during happy hour, and that meant you could get three queso Birria tacos for 10 bucks not bad if you ask me! We each ordered a plate of three and got shrimp cocktail and the Birria Ramen to share. Everything was flavorful, hot and delicious we personally like our Birria a little more spicy but I do understand you have to appeal to the masses with the restaurant For everybody to enjoy it not only spicy lovers like ourselves. The shrimp cocktail had an abundance of large shrimp, not the tiny salad shrimps you get at some restaurants and the Ramen was good but again I think it was just missing that little bit of spice that we were craving but again that's personal preference, so I cannot blame them for that. However they have incredibly amazing hot salsa that took care of our need for spice my wonderful hubby enjoyed it very much and said it was spicy so if he thinks it's spicy you know it's spicy good I highly recommend trying out this establishment if you're going to go on the weekends, you better go early as a Castroville native seeing the lines on the weekend makes me appreciate them being open during the weekdays lol And again, if your lines are that long, you're doing something right notable mention if you like the traditional Birria De chivo- you're in luck as they are serving up the classic style most people are looking for I know it's not it for everybody but if you know you know. Run don't walk and bring your appetite!"

Service was fast and friendly. Authentic Mexican food, like homemade. Got the birria ramen and it was kind of plan, the broth was salty.

My parents swear that this place has the best menudo and they weren't wrong. The food and service were top tier. I also couldn't believe how busy it gets. Will be retuning soon

You 've got to make this a must do on your journey. Worth the slight detour when driving the coast. To go only since its Covid September. must try the Red Tacos , enchiladas were great too. Visualizza piatti

The best birria, great service while in the place BUT The very WORST phone service. I called about 10 times, and they never answered. When I walked in, they said they never got a call, so I called right then and gess what the phone rang , she said that they had been busy. THEY JUST DON'T LIKE ANSWERING THE PHONE.

Uncertain the reasons for the lesser reviews... we grew up with Mexican restaurants a dime a dozen and this was the BEST... Super burrito was crispy on outside and filled with yummy flavors... we sat outside patio with our Weimaraner and staff was very kind to us and our fur baby... already recommended to neighbors You will be pleased Visualizza piatti

Really good hole-in-the-wall! Hubby requested to go here for his birthday and oh my goodness, he was so happy inhaling his goat birria (they also have beef if goat is not your thing). He said the corn tortillas were the best he's had in a while. The strawberry margarita I got was made with real strawberries and was surprisingly sophisticated. I got a birria crunchy taco with consomé, but I also got the authentic bean and cheese burrito I've been looking for. The cheese was really good, the beans were nuclear hot and creamy, and the flour tortilla held its shape. You definitely don't come here for the ambience. I'll probably just grab and go next time.

We came in here for tacos. They have a wide selection from tacos to enchiladas to quesadillas. I wanted to try the sopas because I've never had that before. It was delicious. I also got some crispy tacos those were okay. I had added to order of the chicken tortilla soup. The soup was in a clear broth unlike other places which has a tomato base to the chicken broth. The soup was very nicely made. There was plenty of chicken and crispy tortillas as it's soaked up the soup giving it more flavor. They have other soups depending on the day of the week and I really wanted the posolli which I'm going to have to try and go back. The service is friendly but there was a slight language barrier because...

"It’s good they are closing. Hopefully they will run a better business in their LaCoste location. Visited on Saturday September 28th, unknowingly 1 day before their final day of business, and what a dump and a generally miserable experience. One review says the owner has had this restaurant since he immigrated from Sicily in 2001. That’s a crock as just a few years ago it was an Alsatian restaurant run by another family, this place has only been opened approximately 3 years. The building could be awesome, but I’m sure between whomever owns it and whatever historical preservation societies exist in Castroville it would be expensive to make the place even decent. It’s a hot, muggy craphole. That’s why I never went back to the Alsatian restaurant and I was hoping it would have been better by now. Owner and his family must live in site as there was one daughter in the courtyard in her PJs and one son on a lounge chair behind the cash register. They mumble when they speak. Are rude. Slam the back door next to diners. Chicken tetrazzini was pretty flavorless with overcooked spaghetti. The carbonara was meh with the same noodles. Overall typical poorly run family business. They start something, do well enough then never change anything because they either don’t want to or can’t spend any money on anything considered an upgrade. Unable to see the benefit of upgrading the customer experience."

"It's been a long while since the last time my wife and I were here. The Castroville Cafe is really a charming place, located in what used to be an old house. Very nicely decorated inside and out. The food is what you come for and not the ambiance but it's really nice when the two work so well together. My wife and I shared a sandwich called the Rachel, sliced turkey, coleslaw, Swiss cheese and thousand island dressing on toasted rye. Now I'll be honest here, that first bite of the sandwich was good but I thought it was a little sweet for me. I think it just surprised me a little bit, I wasn't expecting that and I don't know why, it plainly said it has coleslaw and thousand island dressing. Well that sandwich was delicious. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also had a cup of chicken tortilla soup with the sandwich. You wouldn't think that would be a good soup and sandwich combination but you would be wrong. The soup was homemade and it was also super flavorful. My wife had the potato salad for her side and she really enjoyed it. It can seem a little pricey, but you won't feel that way after you taste the food. The waitstaff was very attentive and they couldn't have been nicer. Even the people seated around us were talking about how good the food was. If it's a nice day, sit outside on the front porch and people watch. If it's cool outside they'll even bring you a blanket. I think you'll enjoy this little jewel of a restaurant in Castroville."
