"Elysian is my favorite restaurant in Los Angeles. Tucked away in an industrial area near the LA River, you enter the restaurant by passing a wooden gate and wandering through a bamboo oasis. On sunny days or warm evenings, you can have a drink or eat in the garden/patio area. Inside, the restaurant feels more like a gallery--spacious, minimal, contemporary, with concrete floors, art on the walls, open kitchen. If you have been there more than once, Bethany, the hostess, will recognize you and greet you warmly. And while it still feels like they are working out some service kinks--I sometimes get the feeling that the servers have never waited tables before--the friendliness and food more than make up for the occasional oversights. Chef David Thorne's cooking--seasonal, local California-Mediterranean cuisine--is what keeps me coming back. Befitting the setting, each plate is like a work of art, but never fussy, just delicious. The portions aren't huge, but because they are so balanced and flavorful, they satisfy. Make sure you get on their mailing list. The weekly emails are creative and funny and will entice you with a photo of the week's new dish and what to expect on the menu. Although it's only open Thursday-Friday for dinner and Sunday brunch, I've made it part of my weekly routine. It feels like being invited to a meal with friends, friends who live in a beautiful loft and just happen to be great artists and cooks."

It was a lovely summer evening, so we chose to sit outside, but we first took a look inside and found the ambiance to be quite nice. We’ll definitely be returning.

My second visit to Elysian for brunch was as delightful as the first. This time there was a crowd waiting and eating inside and out. The kitchen and staff were efficient and consistent in the preparation and delivery of an enjoyable meal.

I absolutely adore Bethany and the entire team. The food is fantastic, and the cocktails are delightful. What really stands out, though, is the wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. It's like a garden oasis nestled in an industrial area, beautifully designed without being overly trendy. View menu

What a relaxing and delicious getaway, a thousand miles away from the outside world! We enjoyed some incredible specialty cocktails that perfectly satisfied our cravings for both savory and sweet flavors. With our group of five, we sampled nearly all the dishes on the menu, and every single one was delightful. Elysian!

I visited Elysian last week for a meal, and I was impressed by the wonderful hospitality from the hostess and waitress. The restaurant's design is just my style and really appealing. The food was good, though not outstanding. I appreciate that they have a full bar, and I look forward to enjoying a few drinks there again.

Valentine's Day brunch was a big disappointment. We waited a long time to be seated and then they were out of a lot of items on the menu. Service was extremely slow but the food was okay. As a long time resident of the east side I was excited to check it out. Sadly, it fell short of the reviews and my expectations. Overall not a good experience. View menu

an extremely charming place; appealing and interesting decoration, community tables that arrive for the exchange of the joy of the dishes, eating is interesting and fresh from taking as much as desired. I have been there twice and promise every time I come back to sit in the sweet lazy lounge and taste with one of their amazing cocktails. I'm eager to wait for the summer months when I'm pretty sure they use some of their gloomy cool outside space to feed more of us.

The space, the decor, the staff, the menu in general including the intriguing drinks, the food itself, the wine, the service, the overall delight of the experience: Elysian is a wonderful place to dine. Open only a few occasions a week, it's a plan-ahead kind of treat. Tables are shared most often but it's very likely to be with people you'd like to know. I call it romantic in spite of shared tables because it's such a lovely experience to enjoy with loved ones. I'd say great for families because the garden is perfect for running off steam--and the staff is gracious to one and all. I will go to Elysian whenever I'm in LA and urge my friends to do so as well. A totally special experience.
