"Used to frequent Whip In pretty often about 7-8 years ago w/ some baseball teammates of mine after games. This was my first time back in many years, and I was looking forward to it. Came in after a Friday night baseball game just looking to grab some food to go since I was flying solo. I checked google to make sure they were still open, and to my delight, they were open til 11 pm. Got there at 9:35. Sat at the bar. Told the bartender that I was going to order some food to go, but would grab a beer while I waited. She poured me a beer while I checked the menu, which seemed to be the same as years prior. Saw what I wanted and was ready to order almost immediately, but the bartender had since disappeared. After a couple minutes, she came back, and I tried to get her attention, but she didn 't look in my direction. She then assisted the only other two patrons at the bar, so I waited patiently until I could get her attention. I finally did and told her what food I wanted. As I was ordering, she simply said, kitchen 's closed and walked away. Never saw her again. Hungry and confused, I just sat there and finished my beer. The patron sitting at the bar a few seats over from me then ordered some food (and got it) 5 minutes after me. It 's too bad that Whip In, like so many Austin staples, has seemingly plummeted in recent years. I was about to spend over $100 on food and beer to go. I was also going to bring 12-15 of my teammates there to drink and eat after our next game. Guess we 'll have to go somewhere else that wants our money instead. The 1 star is for the Whip In of many years ago.Edit: after reading a bunch of reviews, it seems like I actually dodged a bullet by the miserable bartender not taking my food order."

"This food was amazing. It also just happened to be vegan. I’m not a vegan. I’m an omnivore, but I appreciate good food regardless of dietary restrictions. Let me start off by saying, ORDER THE FRIED OYSTER MUSHROOMS! This was the best fried food I have ever had. In. My. LIFE. They were that good. Just get it, you won’t regret it. Second, the ratatouille was fantastic. It was great on its own, but the fried tofu on top sent it over the top (and added protein)! The mushrooms en papillote were good. They came with carrots and potatoes all cooked en papillote with thyme and orange. The “cream” sauce was also thyme and orange flavored, but it had too much orange for my taste. It was still good, but it was my least favorite dish of the night. The bananas Foster’s was good, but not traditional. It was almost like a savory very of the dish. It had a noticeably grilled taste. Still great, but different. My only complaint of the evening was service. There was one woman hosting, serving, and bartending. Naturally, service was a little slow, and she failed to clear the empty appetizer platter when she brought the mains. Ambiance is great, light, casual, tastefully decorated. Although the sprinkler head light fixtures weren’t my style, everything else was aces. Will definitely return! I might even bring a vegan with me next time to get their take!"
