"Very happy to have a nice restaurant in Blue Hill, and I appreciate one with a chef that knows how to put together an intriguing menu that makes you want to come back and try each item. I know I am in good hands when the marrow bone is perfectly tender, pate comes with delectable pickled onions (all we needed was more bread! and the German Belgian influenced mains are as juicy and filling as you’d get in Frankfurt. This is the only place near here where I have seen an orange wine on a menu except Aragosta, points for that! I am hopeful this new business continues to evolve their menu, find local favorites and try new things."

Excellent food in a welcoming and homey atmosphere. Fairly priced and nice variety of meals. Known for its brick oven baked pizza. View menu

Went to dinner with some friends. The menu has many unique items and it is perfect for those who would like to share. Everything was delicious; salad, mussels, potato dumplings, flatbread and dessert. The service was great and the atmosphere was charming. Service: 5 Location: 5 View menu

What a refreshing take on a Maine B B! First of all, you can't MISS the building from the road--literally the combo of a barn and a castle, such cool architecture. I only went to try the restaurant, not the hotel itself, but what a perfect little escape. My partner and I loved the chef's take on Alsatian food--we've never been to France, but we were definitely transported to a new place! As residents of the area, it was so cool to see a different type of cuisine represented in Maine. Lizzie Owen, the new owners, are too sweet for words--we cannot wait to go back!

We went to the Barncastle restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The food was excellent, but the dining experience was not. Within minutes of being served our drinks, we were served our appetizers; and in the middle having of our appetizers, our entrees were brought out. We assume that either the kitchen, or the wait staff, or the maître d’, do not have down the art of coordination of timing, which is as much a part of the dining experience as the food. And, by the way, avoid the table for two in the corner under the tall lamp. It quickly gets stifling there due to lack of any air circulation. Service: 2

"The Lobster Shack is a small, BYOB, lobster shack, on a wharf in Surry, Maine. It has no land food. This is a traditional Lobster Shack, like those you will find throughout most of the small inlets and peninsulas, along the coast of Maine. The atmosphere is great. All seating is outside at picnic styles bench and tables. Seating is on a long wharf jutting out into Blue Hill Bay. Together with the salt air, and views of Cadillac Mountain in the background, the aesthetic is sublime. I am not a fan of seafood, but my wife and family are, so I will rate the food based on their descriptions. Food receives thumbs up. The lobster is steamed just right. Corn is tender. Rolls are typical white, soft rolls found in New England. Steamers are good, and receive praise from my family. For those who only eat land food, bring food to bbq, they have a grill for you to use. There is locally made soda to drink, and if you need an alcoholic beverage, BYOB. Dessert is good. Ice cream from Morton's Moo and pie at times. Service is good. Servers are attentive in this casual atmosphere. We have been frequenting this location for years, and always come back. Although I don't eat seafood, I always eat the corn and rolls, with whatever meat dish I brought. This is a great place, and really, the prices and servings are no different than any other lobster shack and pound within the state. For the lobster lover, looking for a splendid location, this place is for you."
