"In 2018 my husband and I took a trip of a life time and visited Japan for a month, visiting Tokyo, Sendai, And Kyoto, with day trips all across the island. We threw ourselves into the sights, sounds, and the food like the gluttons we are. We had both wanted to visit Japan before we even met and we finally pulled the trigger. A day doesnt go by where I dont think about the trip.Since returning weve been starved for the exquisite flavors of Japan. Last year we moved to Colorado and we were recently guided to Osakas and it was like being teleported back to Japan. From the okonomiyaki, to the ramen, to the sushi, all of it took us back to our favorite places on our trip.On our first visit I tried the the kaisen (seafood) okonomiyaki, which was rich and flavorful, spiced and cooked perfectly. The husband tied the modan (pork belly) version. Both of the dishes took us back to a little place we tried in Kyoto. We were so impressed we decided to try a sushi plate, the cuts were thick, and it was like butter, like the sushi house we tried in Sendai. Our most recent visit we went for ramen, and we both tried Osakas signature bowl. The pork broth is stunning, creamy, and full of flavor. And my word, the cashu literally falls apart its so tender. Weve been desperate to find ramen that compares to our time in Japan and Osakas has filled that that little hole weve been missing. The owner stopped by our table and we shared our story and he shared his with us, and it was just delightful. The staff is so friendly, and we tried using what little Japanese we knew from our trip to show how much we had appreciated the food and service. This is our new favorite place to visit, well be back, hell Ive been there three times in the last month."

"This is probably more like a 3.5 but I'll give it 4 because I like the idea and the menu. It's a cute restaurant near Pearl street with a nice ambiance. Came here with my husband and kids on a Saturday night at 5pm and they were able to seat us without a reservation. Service was friendly and great at times, and a little slower at others. No kids menu but they do offer chicken fingers/fries or buttered pasta for the kiddos. Both kids got the chicken fingers and fries and reported that the fries were the best they've ever had and they've eaten a lot of fries . They said the chicken fingers crispy crust was more like that of a fish stick--to me it tasted light and crispy. Now to the important food--adult food! My husband and I shared the hamachi crudo and the olive oil poached halibut. The crudo was only ok as the fish tasted fishy, and it needed a touch more seasoning. For the bites where there was a good amount of flaked sea salt, it was better. Beautiful dish but would not order again. The halibut was delicious though--some spicy Calabrian chilis below which added a nice heat, and the squash purée was a nice touch. It would have been nice to have even more purée and also to season the chunks of grilled zucchini a bit more. The shaved zucchini had great seasoning though. We finished off with the peanut butter cup dessert. That was also only ok. The pb mouse was a little loose/runny/soup like and the proportion of mouse to the small scoop of chocolate ice cream was too great. Plus there were 5-7 chocolate brownie ? bits but they were super crispy and hard--would have like a softer chewier brownie instead. Overall it was really nice to go to a fancy-ish restaurant and still have a couple of kid food options, but I'd skip dessert and choose a different app."

"I’m extremely disappointed with the service we received last week! Two years ago for the first time my boyfriend and I had take out and we liked the tapas. We really wanted to visit the restaurant, well what a bad experience, the service pushed us to eat super fast, we wanted to keep the menu in case we want another tapa and they took it, we just received the first tapas and they already were asking if want dessert, we were thinking they forgot some tapas we asked and when we just received the tapas, they said I’ll back in 5 minutes and “5 minutes later” they came again asking again if we wanted dessert and we still were eating, we said no dessert and they brought the check 30 seconds later. We literally had the most rushed dinner in our life, I never in 50 years experienced something like that. The next two tables to us were totally relaxed with no pressure and the waitress offered to them a super nice service offering some drinks after dinner while we were already receiving the check, even they were at the restaurant before we came. In my opinion, it’s better to say to the customer that you have to eat and leave the place in 30 minutes because they close at 9:00 pm and the customer would decide if they want to stay or not. We had to leave the place before 9 pm! and still the two other tables were there service. First and last time going to the restaurant, if we have next time I would prefer take out."

"It is a beautiful thing to see so many people exploring vegetarianism and considering new ways of thinking about food. It is even more beautiful to find a restaurant like Leaf in Boulder that not only serves great vegetarian food but also supports local farms and businesses while doing it. I am embarrassed to admit I never knew of this restaurant and only found it after looking for vegetarian options for Christmas dinner dining out. I am also embarrassed to have excluded dining options in Boulder for so long. This is the first Boulder restaurant I have reviewed, but it will certainly not be the last, if I can pull myself away from Leaf. Originally, the website attracted my interest in Leaf. There are full menus posted, including prices, and the variety is very good. There is something vegetarian on the menu for just about any taste, even carnivores. I also like the daily 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Happy Hour featuring $3.50 house wine, $5.00 martinis and reduced prices on appetizers and salads. Leaf offers organic, biodynamic and sustainable wines from around the country and the world, and Boulder’s own Vodka 14 premium vodka. Being a vegetarian who likes a good martini and loves to support Colorado and American business, I had to visit, but I came for the food, not the beverage, at least this time. We started dinner with a very adequate glass of red house wine. I cannot tell you what it was, because I do not remember. I just remember that there was one red and one white offered at happy hour and I opted for the red. It was good and especially nice at $3.50 during happy hour. Next, we sampled an appetizer and happy hour must have ended because the Mediterranean Plate appetizer we had is priced at $4.00 during happy hour, but we were charged the regular $7.00 price. The Mediterranean Plate came in a nice presentation and was beautiful to look at, but, even at $4.00, you do not get much for the money. Everything was very tasty, and the small quantities are fine as an appetizer for two, but, if you are hungry, this will do little to satisfy your cravings and will only pique your hunger. That is what an appetizer is supposed to do, right? I want to mention that the baba ganoush on the appetizer was different than any I have tasted anywhere. I could detect no tahini in it at all and it seemed more like an eggplant puree than baba ganoush. Nonetheless, it had a good flavor, I liked it, and I like to explore creative variations. For my entrée, I chose the Barbecue Seitan, and I was not disappointed. I was very pleased with the flavor and texture of the Seitan and would not hesitate to serve this entrée to any of my carnivore friends. The entrée comes with garlic mashed potatoes, red pepper corn slaw and jalapeno corn bread. The potatoes and the slaw were fantastic taste treats, but they did not taste as if they were low in fat. Yet, only the cornbread really disappointed me. I could not detect any jalapeno in there, either in flavor or in pieces. Overall, it was very dry, ordinary, and took more away from the meal than it added. The second entrée was Butternut Squash Tower featuring squash from the 63rd Street Farm in Louisville. This sweet and savory combination featured squash, eggplant, caramelized onions served with collard greens and a slice of grilled green apple in cranberry-cashew “cream”. I am not a big fan of squash, but this one rules! It is an excellent mixing of flavors and textures in gorgeous presentation. This entrée will even turn the heads and light up the taste buds of people who claim they do not like squash. It is a winner. Although we did not try it, they also offer a “Prix Fixe Trio” on the menu. What that means is $26 gets you your choice of any two appetizers, (called small plates), soups, or salads and one entrée. It’s a good deal. They also have a Monday Night Wine Special featuring 25% of any wine purchased by the bottle. The restaurant is very clean and nicely decorated, the staff we encountered were all very professional and very good, and the food was excellent. It is no wonder they claim to be Boulder’s favorite vegetarian restaurant. They just took over the top spot as my favorite vegetarian restaurant and I am kicking myself for not discovering them sooner."

"The Sun (Mountain Sun on Pearl and Southern Sun off Table Mesa) was a regular stop when I lived in Boulder; I was vegetarian then and, given a customizable veggie burger and several other options, had plenty of choices. I recently went back to visit Boulder and stopped in (OK, three times). I'm vegan now and it was still a great place. The decor is fun: Boulder hippie, Grateful Dead-inspired stuff. Their beer selection is phenomenal (though they ran out of my favorite Rouge de Brouge just before I arrived). There is often a wait, sometimes a long one, but it's worth it. One of the things I really like about the Sun is that all employees cycle through all jobs: cook, wait staff, kitchen help. They all tip-share. This means that everyone there knows exactly what's in everything on the menu. I was quickly told that the veggie burger is vegetarian, not vegan. While that was disappointing, the remaining food options were great. They were, however, only three: a portabella sandwich, a tempeh sandwich, or the veggie burrito (all minus cheese). I'm not a big mushroom or tempeh fan, so I had the burrito. Two days in a row. Since I didn't get cheese, I smothered it in salsa. Fantastic! They also have daily specials. On my first (of three) visits this trip, they had something called the Yellow Submarine: a vegan curry. It was simply the best curry I have ever tried. I asked for the recipe, offered to pay for it, but was given it complimentary. Yes, vegan choices are limited. Vegetarians have more choices. Nevertheless, the food that you can have here is delicious. Don't pass it by!"
