"As soon as we stepped into the bowling alley, we were hit by an unpleasant odor. Having bowled there a few times over the years, we were pretty hungry and made our way to Shorters. There was only one other customer ahead of us, and the young lady who took our order was friendly. Mr. Shorter entered shortly after and began chatting with a male friend who was watching TV. They engaged in conversation while assembling a portable sink Mr. Shorter had brought in. At one point, he acknowledged my husband with a semi-nod, but I found it strange that he didn’t greet any of the customers dining there. We ordered hot links, three sides (potato salad, fries, mustard greens), two Shasta sodas, and a tri-tip sandwich, totaling about $40. After about fifteen minutes of waiting, I noticed no one in the kitchen was wearing hair coverings while handling food. The footrest area at the bar needed cleaning, and I had to ask the cashier to rinse off the top of my soda can, which was dirty. When our food arrived, it was delivered by a young woman with a bushy ponytail. The hot links were drenched in BBQ sauce, lacking grill marks, and they were warm but not hot. The potato salad did help enhance their flavor, but they weren’t spicy as the cashier had mentioned. The fries were two-toned, hard, stale, and looked like they were the last of the batch — only one fry was soft and warm. My tri-tip sandwich had a good amount of meat, but it wasn’t hot, and the bun had a pinkish liquid soaked into one corner, which made me concerned that the meat wasn’t cooked properly. Two bites into it, I wasn’t impressed, and it didn’t smell fresh. I ended up scraping the meat off the bun into my husband’s link container in an attempt to salvage it. As a Southern woman who knows good soul food and can cook, I must say the greens were not memorable at all! We genuinely wanted to support this local business and speak with Mr. Shorter about our dissatisfaction, but we were unsure how he would take it. The only time he acknowledged us was as we were leaving. I dislike writing negative reviews, but this reflects our experience and the truth. I wish the business all the best, but they need to make some significant improvements before we consider returning."

"Entering into this neighborhood which lies west of Jack London in a tough n' gritty part of town, remains mixed of residents surrounded by commercial and industrial warehouses in close proximity to housed cargo containers, railroad tracks and the port. Driving west on 7th Street and left on Adeline, I shared the road with diesels trucks passing by heading over the causeway bridge that leads to down to the docks. Upon my embarkation from Adeline Street tucked away just below the BART rails overhead, I discovered the driveway leading to the rear of this lone brick building that seemed to exist in the middle of nowhere. You can practically feel the ghostly presence of old southern laborers who ventured west to work the shipyards. Stepping out from my car in the rear parking lot, I encountered the most distinguishing familiar aroma. But this was not just the smell of bar b que. Oh, no. It was the aroma of a superb vintage recipe traced back to Waco, Texas. A smell from the past of my own childhood innocence when I recall my neighbor's dad Mr. Charlie Green from Texas who made the best and most famous bar b que on the block. I have not traced that smell since. I knew that this was the smell of true Texan dry rubbed smoked barbeque. Wow, I didn't quite know what to think. While I was anxious to sample the taste of possibly great food, I also could feel the haunting souls of old shipyard laborers lingering about this place. My feelings were mixed about entering the red brick building, however I continued. Once inside, I felt the uneasiness of an unwelcome stranger, who was perhaps too fancy for this saloon, but it was Friday after all and I just needed to shake the dust off from my boots and cool my heels with perhaps a cold sarsaparilla. There were several neighborly folk sitting at the bar, playing pool and eatting plates of catfish and fried chicken. The waitress, modestly pleasant, who had only been on the job for three days, took our drink of Cran Man (mandarin absolute and crandberry) and a cognac and food order and returned with well portioned plates. We ordered an oyster loaf, a shrimp loaf and a bar b que dinner all for a modest price. The oyster and shrimp sandwich was fried in a light batter and came on a buttered French roll with lettuce, tomato and plenty of pickles and steak fries on the side. The cup of coleslaw was the best tasting house made slaw that I have ever had. The shrimp were actually medium prawns and were perfectly cooked. The oysters were rather pretty good, although I prefer them fried harder. The Q was the best. They offer hotlink, chicken and rib dinners. It comes with baked beans, potato salad and coleslaw. Notably, the ribs were tender, lean with the fat trimmed and carefully prepared by a master q'er. The size of the ribs were small to medium, indicating that the age of animal was youthful, unlike the huge and tough Amazon ribs that is served at Everett and Jones. The portions were appetizing, however I wish there were a few more ribs in the dinner. JK's is not a restaurant by traditional terms, it is a local dive where you can hang your boots, share some libations and spirits and with locals and spirits; shoot the schtick with local folk and enjoy the eats."

"My boss recommended this place and it's large fully stuffed baked potato. Went in today 2-4-22 around 5:45. Four people behind the glass cases that display a nice variety of food . However, I was not acknowledged by any of the four staff persons that were clearly doing something behind the counter. It took a few before the man out of the bunch said we will be right with you . No face contact , just a voice from behind the counter. The two females appeared to be in the middle of a lesson or training on what food items were inside the display. I had eye contact with them and yet they didn't stop to ask if they could be of assistance.I stood waiting and noticed another person pacing and also waiting for what appeared to be a take out order and she shook her head . As if she was telling me..don't do it lolWith that ... I knew it would be a long wait and I was debating on staying .. after some thought and looking over the variety of hot items available, honestly nothing in the hot box looked appealing chicken looked dry ribs were sparse in appearance and the meat that's classified as a ball looked dry as well.On the other hand while waiting and reviewing the menue. The butcher meat selection was amazing to see. Good sized portions and reasonably priced .Service is essential and for me to pay top dollar, one would expect better customer service skills . And yes, I recognize that may have been an issue as they seemed to be in the training phase with one of the gals behind the counter . We all can do better . I left with my money in my pocket."
