"Had a really horrible experience with Strange Brew after several years of going there occasionally for coffee and a dessert or a breakfast sandwich alone or with my husband and son. Ordered a Chef Special Salad. Description is “arugula, roasted beets, goat cheese, sliced almonds, dried cranberries, roasted pulled chicken, mustard tarragon dressing “ for $12 (an entree salad per the manager). There was a ton of arugula but very, very little of everything else — see photos. I was shocked when I saw this and immediately called them. I had already used my lunch break to pick up the salad so couldn’t go back to return it. The manager had me take photos and email them twice, talked twice on the phone, and then said the other ingredients only looked sparse because I had mixed up the salad. The side photo clearly shows little mixed below the surface. Why make me go to this effort and then insult me by suggesting I was hiding the ingredients. Manager offered to bring me a new salad but if he thinks the original is acceptable, then we’re back where we started. Plus it’s getting late and I don’t have any more time. I did the right thing by calling immediately and sending photos. That should have been the end of it with the charge being reversed on the unacceptable item, apology made, and asking me to come back to try them again sometime, or some normal response like that. Instead, he starts being subtly insulting and trying to negotiate half off since it’s like a side salad — but I didn’t order a side salad, it’s supposed to be an entree salad! I didn’t get what I paid for, end of story. This is 100% unsatisfactory. Beware of buying food there if this is how it can be, a rip-off. And you will be treated badly by the management to boot. Just read a few other reviews that were negative and the manager or owner gives a long defensive response, citing industry standards and supporting small businesses for why the complaint isn’t legit, even insulting another reviewer. The bottom line here is that a customer found their experience to be unsatisfactory, was asked to prove it by providing photos, was still not believed, a lot of time was wasted along the way, and the customer service experience was very negative. This is not the way it should go."

"The truth is, this place has potential, but it will likely remain merely average. It's difficult to serve good BBQ when the kitchen was closed the day before and the smoker isn’t operating around the clock. If you read the reviews, you'll see the owner has never taken responsibility for any issues. I recently had my father visiting and we decided to go for ribs on a Saturday afternoon. I called at noon to place an order, but by 2 PM, there were still no ribs! How can a BBQ restaurant not have ribs available at noon on a Saturday? It’s not that they were sold out; they just hadn’t prepared any yet. The inconsistency is frustrating, and if the owner truly cared about his business, such a situation would be unacceptable. Once again, Mr. Phat T continues to disappoint. He reacts to negative reviews with mockery and insults, making unfounded assumptions about customers. As a business owner with 150 employees, he would benefit from learning how to treat customers and handle negative feedback in a constructive manner. Happy customers may share their experience with three people, while unhappy ones usually tell ten about their negative experiences. If the owner thinks people don’t notice how he responds to reviews, they might just choose to stay away. It seems that if he is content with the current level of business and income, he might not care about everyone else. I would have happily revised my review, but when someone responds by calling another person clueless, it only reinforces my original point about Mr. Phat T's attitude!"

"For instance, one reviewer, NewStyle Modeling, claims, "I really don’t think their food is fresh. My mom used to take us here for years. After eating organic and grass-fed meat, I can see this place isn’t good anymore. I also think their kitchen area is not clean." In response, I ask: Did you speak to Tootsie about this? Their food has always been fresh, and I've never encountered any food quality or cleanliness issues. Plus, in the fall of 2017, they completely revamped the buffet area and upgraded some kitchen equipment. If you're critiquing the age of the equipment rather than its cleanliness, please remember that many successful restaurants with a long history have old equipment that is still well-maintained. Another review from Miss Phillips states, "I will never eat there again; the ignorant manager is so disrespectful to women." Again, I ask: Did you discuss this with Tootsie? Was this disrespect experienced by many women or just you? What specific incident occurred? I have spoken with her many times over the years and found her to be insightful about the challenges women face in the workplace. She runs one of the few women-owned businesses in the market. Sweeny D'Souza, a reviewer with a real name, noted, "Staff are okay, but the owner is great and very helpful." I agree! Laurie Powell mentioned, "I try to eat here several times a week. The food is excellent, always fresh, and the staff is friendly." It raises a simple question: How many women would eat several times a week at a place they felt was dirty or served stale food? The answer is none. These women are reviewing Tootsie’s because it stands out as an exception to the norm. Randy Zeitman"
