"We have thrived in Michelin-star restaurants all over the world and have always trusted this review as our experiences were always phenomenal. Yesterday Barndiva was a great disappointment. Our dishes were lacking in sophistication, surprise or the elevated artistry we would expect from a Michelin cook. The dishes were either too strong spices or oiled or lack of taste. We could hear from some neighboring tables (as we were crowded together) that they had a similar experience of spicy or inspiring tastes. Even the food presentation was simple and simple. Our service was subordinate and uncoordinated. We had to ask many times to refill our water to cool off the excessively seasoned first course. You missed clearing our plates before a next course arrived. We also had a birthday dinner and they only remembered at the end of the evening. We have asked for basic food allergies substitutions. The waitress was not aware of some dishes. It seemed to the boss lacked the ability to swing on some of the dishes and the result was even more disappointing for the dishes he modified. Note, some dishes were as intended and still subpar. The total value was not there for the meal. We have frustrated and disappointed. We had chosen Barndiva for an extraordinary birthday dinner. We've been overpaid. Even for half the price, it would still not be worth the money. We would recommend Guiso Latin Fusion for increased taste profiles, presentation and creativity for a fraction of the cost."

"I hadn’t been there in a while and, frankly, was a little wary. I feared it might be resting on its laurels. An icon, not really a restaurant. Man, was I wrong. This is as good a restaurant of its kind in New York, and I say that as a native Manhattanite and as someone who has been to and enjoyed all of the more celebrated and trendy names that serve similar dishes. The various steaks, especially the ribeye, were extraordinary (right word). Everyone in our foodie group of eight felt that way, and we felt the same about the asparagus—cooked expertly—the cream spinach and the potatoes. Just a great night that wasn’t overpriced. We will all be regulars there. Bravo to the service, too. Lone qualms: They need to add some better medium-priced wines to their list. It’s just too ordinary. We brought three bottles of our own—each was excellent and ran around $25 per—and paid the hefty $45 per bottle corking fee and it was worth it. And they need to offer full cakes for celebrations. We brought a small birthday cake from Whole Foods (delicious) and paid the $10 per plate fee. However, if they had been able to tell me they had a cake that they could do with writing for, say, $125 or a little more (ours worked out to $105), I would have happily said yes. We needed a full cake. Individual pieces wouldn’t have made it. Small stuff. Here’s to an icon that’s also a great restaurant."

"Cafe Bizou has been a favorite love of ours for many years. We find ourselves driving over the hill a few times a month just to have a romantic dinner there together. It brings back fond memories, allows us a chance to catch up on old times and always welcomes us back no matter how long ago our previous visit may have been. Cafe Bizou’s scrumptious French cuisine will make anyone’s mouth water, senses heighten and heart skip a beat. Despite the fact that there is no Happy Hour at Cafe Bizou, this eatery is still high on our Savor Hour list. For starters, their corkage fee is $2. TWO DOLLARS! And that’s EVERY NIGHT! (Time to take a trip to the wine locker)! This not only makes the bill much easier to handle, but it also allows for more room to enjoy the items on the menu. We usually bring our own wine to dinner there. When we do, we also bring two of our large Reidel red wine glasses as well to enjoy our wine. It’s just something we stared doing a couple of years ago, and it sort of stuck. You can always order a glass of wine off the menu, of course, as well. Ranging from $7 to $10 per glass, there are several options available if you don’t bring a bottle in to have corked. Once evening approaches, all of the candles are lit on the tables, restaurant lights are lowered giving the entire establishment a romantic feel, and orders of culinary excellence begin pouring out of the kitchen by the smiling waitstaff, soon to be devoured and enjoyed by dining patrons. There is an option to seating areas as well. Multiple dining rooms offer an elegant experience either inside the restaurant at tables draped in white tablecloths and a wall of mirrors, or inside their front enclosed “patio” area, which offers a less formal, yet very comfortable “booth” seating alternative. Both are lovely and offer different views and feels. Personally, we’ve dined in both areas and recommend them both. High quality martinis and other cocktails can be ordered from the bar. Their House Martini list offers eight martinis for $8 each. If you’re not in the mood for bringing in a bottle of wine to go with dinner, you can always opt for one of these divine adult beverages. Offerings include their Cosmopolitan, Sour Apple Martini, the Lemondrop, the Bikini Martini, the Chocolate Martini, the Key Lime Martini, as well as the Red Delicious and Pomegranate Martinis. A nice variety of flavors at a very desirable price. Two of my favorites are their Lemon Drop Martini and the Bikini Martini. The Lemon Drop, made with Absolute Citron shaken with fresh lemonade served with a sugared rim. It’s the perfect amount of tart, an ample supply of sweetness. Delicious! The Bikini Martini is prepared with Malibu Rum, vodka, pineapple juice, and a splash of Grenadine then garnished with a maraschino cherry in the bottom. SO INCREDIBLE! Let’s discuss what else is great besides the smiling staff, incredible cocktails, and romantic, cozy environment at the Sherman Oaks Cafe Bizou. Let’s talk dinner! To begin, a bread basket and glasses of ice water are delivered to your table shortly after you’re seated. (We always ask them to toast our bread because we like it warm, which they are more than happy to do). Soft, full of flavor and tempting enough that on more than one ocassion, the two of us finished off the entire basket and started on a new one! The bread is delightful and delicious and comes served with a porcelain container of individually-wrapped butter. To make matters even better, Cafe Bizou’s appetizer list astounds with quality, variety and flavorful options. The Tuna Tartar and the Baked Mushrooms are two of our favorites, but if you don’t like tuna or mushrooms, then there are the Chicken Potstickers, Lobster and Salmon Ravioli, Crab Cakes, Veal Sweetbreads, the Seared Sesame Ahi Tuna, the Ginger Jumbo Shrimp and also a Combo Plate, which includes Baked Mushrooms, Lobster and Salmon Ravioli and Tuna Tartar. Speaking of Tuna Tartar, it is one of the most delectable Tuna Tartar appetizers anywhere in the Valley. Crispy thinly-sliced toast accompanied by slices of smoked salmon topped with heaping mounds of fresh Tuna Tartar, then finished with a cucumber slice garnish and lemon in the center. Refreshing, flavorful and a true value for the price, this one is a classic signature of the restaurant. One sure to not disappoint. Another highlight of Cafe Bizou’s menu is their option of having a bowl of their Soup of the Day or Romaine Salad with a Dijon honey mustard dressing for just $1 with any entree purchase. You can kick that up a notch and order their Caesar Salad for just $2 with any entree as well. TWO DOLLARS! And it’s not a side salad. This is a very nicely-portioned Caesar Salad for a mere two dollars. Add that to your entree and it’s just sublime. Another recent treat that has been brought back to the menu is the escargot appetizer. Incredibly tender, luciously buttered and the perfect amount of garlic in the sauce. If you haven’t had Cafe Bizou’s escargot, you simply must try them soon. If you’ve never tried escargot, then this is the place to break yourself in! You can’t go wrong with these. Served six to an order, they’re just perfect. Cafe Bizou’s entree selection choices are rather extensive. Ranging from Entree Salads to their Prix Fixed Menu to the Daily Specials and other delectable features including seafood, grill items, pasta dishes, and many others. I’ve added a link to their website where you can see their menu in detail, but I would like to highlight a few of our favorites below. (Okay, maybe several)! (See our blog at SavorHour.com for photos of our favorites)! Hungry yet? Well, be sure to leave room for dessert, because Cafe Bizou offers a varied selection of sweet indulgements such as their Flourless Chocolate Cake, Creme Brulee, their Profiteroles and others to tempt you. We’re not big dessert eaters (most of the time), but two of our favorites here in the past have been the Flourless Chocolate Cake and the Profiteroles. Cafe Bizou in Sherman Oaks has ample delicacies and flavor sensations to please whatever your culinary desires may be. If you haven’t been to this fine palatable institution for some time, it’s time to revisit. If you’ve never been to this French cafe, then it’s time to try it out. Abundant portions, mouth-watering options, stellar service and a cozy, relaxed atmosphere make this a plus for Savor Hour! DECOR ESTABLISHMENT: Charming, romantic and captivating. This French Cafe will romance you as well as your taste buds all the way through your meal from beginning to end. FOOD DRINK: Fresh French cuisine prepared in style, luscious and memorable dishes to suit any cuisine connoisour, and incredible hand-shaken cocktails from the bar will make anyone a return customer! Cugini Grille

"A few months ago, after an absolutely horrific dining experience at Cugini Grill, I called the owners, Debbie or Joe, to discuss our experience in their restaurant . Although it took five phone calls to talk to one of them, Joe did assure me that our miserable experience see below was an isolated incident and would not happen again. He promptly sent me a $50.00 gift certificate which was very nice and urged me to come back. I promised I would refrain from writing a negative review on Menuismr until I gave Cugini Grill a second chance. Regrettably, the second experience was also not good. Albeit, not quite as horrific as the first experience. Here’s what happened TWO MONTHS AGO Our server, Burt yelled at us. I know should be unheard of but a server yelled at a customer me! It was 5:30pm on a Sunday evening. We were one of only two couples in the restaurant at the time. When we arrived, we were seated promptly and our drinks were served efficiently. My husband ordered the crab and corn chowder and I ordered a Caesar salad with dressing on the side. We watched as our soup and salad were made and brought to the pass. We sat for about 20 minutes while Burt disappeared. Finally, he emerged and brought our appetizers. My husband’s soup was room temperature and a skin had formed on top. My Caesar salad arrived with dressing tossed in – not on the side, as I had ordered it. Burt assured me that the dressing was light and it would be to my liking. I agreed to “try it.” My husband sent back his soup as it was inedible. After about 10 more minutes, Burt returned – not with hot soup but with an explanation. He said the soup is supposed to be served room temperature because it’s very spicy. His story was that spicy soups need to be served at room temperature so the heat does not overwhelm ?? . My husband then decided to forgo the soup. At this point, I had tried my Caesar salad but it was drenched in dressing. Because I couldn’t eat it, asked Burt to bring me a new one with the dressing on the side. I told him I had tried it his way but couldn’t eat it. I was taken aback when Burt got angry and raised his voice at me. He told me that I was essentially wasting his time and now he had to go back to the kitchen again. He was upset because I didn’t send it back initially although I had tried to . He still insisted that the dressing was light and that it should be fine. At this point, my husband jumped in and told Burt to bring us our check for the drinks – we were going to eat elsewhere. Then Burt redirected his anger from me to my husband and raised his voice again. He kept repeating the same thing, “Why? What did I do? Why? What did I do?” And my husband had to repeat several times, “It’s just not working out. Please bring our check.” But after a repeating himself about three times, my husband just stopped talking while Burt kept insisting on an answer. Finally after getting nothing but silence from us, he brought the check. But instead of handing it to my husband or placing it down on the table, he jabbed it into my husband’s hand. I was literally shaking when we finally left the restaurant. Here’s what happened LAST NIGHT — Knowing Burt was no longer working at the restaurant and with gift certificate in hand, we walked into Cugini Grille last night at 9:45pm for dinner. The restaurant was mostly empty. We did find it odd since it was Saturday night. Vic Angelo’s, the restaurant next door had a one hour wait for a table. Anyway, our dinner began uneventfully. Our server, Mitch, was very pleasant. Again, my husband ordered the same soup crab and corn chowder and I ordered the Caesar salad with dressing on the side. The chowder was served at an appropriate temperature it could have been hotter but it was fine , and my salad was perfect – and arrived with dressing on the side. The salad was excellent but the chowder was nothing special and certainly not spicy. As we were waiting for our tapas to arrive, servers began removing tables from the middle of the restaurant. Apparently the restaurant turns into a discotheque at 10PM including dance floor, DJ, loud sound system and lights! So much for our quiet romantic dinner…no one told us about the discotheque when we were seated for dinner! Mitch, our server, was very gracious when we asked to be moved to the outside seating where it was quieter even though there was a steady flow of passersby . While I didn’t mind the fact that it was 90 degrees outside yes, even at that hour , I don’t like cigarette or cigar smoke especially while eating. Once situated outside we were surrounded by smokers. No matter which way the breeze went, we were overcome by smoke. Good grief! We were in deep and past the point of no return. The next tapas that arrived were the spring rolls and beef Carpaccio. The spring rolls were good – not great. The beef Carpaccio was good, although not among the best I’ve eaten. Oh no! The servers opened the windows of the restaurant. At this point, there absolutely no way to avoid being subjected to the discotheque! The chicken quesadillas, the last of the tapas, finally arrived as 5 pie shaped pieces. The outside of the quesadillas wasn’t a traditional tortilla but some sort of dough Pillsbury? . Two of the five pieces had no filling of any kind in them. The three middle sections had chicken and cheese but tasted so incredibly dry. The quesadillas were drizzled with a balsamic sauce but no salsa or dipping sauce was provided. This was the worst chicken quesadillas I had ever been served. There just wasn’t a point to say anything to Mitch regarding this dish. We just wanted to get the check and leave. There are some restaurants where the food is good and the ambiance isn’t. There are others that the ambiance is good but the food is isn’t. Cugini Grill missed on both counts. This restaurant is clearly hanging on because of Vic Angelo’s overflow folks not wanting to wait the hour for a table . Don’t be part of the overflow – wait the hour or try somewhere else. There are much better restaurants in Delray Beach. Cugini Grill shouldn’t even be considered. Cugini Grille: Never again!"
