"GOOD NOT GREAT Murphy’s is an iconic neighborhood restaurant nestled in the heart of the inviting and very walkable Virginia Highlands neighborhood. On this warm Saturday evening, we shared the Panko crusted crab cake and vegetable appetizer, two entrees: a lobster roll with parmesan fries and the Guinness braised brisket with a side of crispy brussels sprouts, and two desserts: the tollhouse pie and the peach galette. Interestingly, the vegetables on the appetizer stole the show: fresh, very well-seasoned, a plate cleaner to be sure so our mom’s would be proud. The crab cake was indeed mostly crab, and not full of cake filling as experienced in some other mid-tier restaurants. Unfortunately, the lemon seasoning was far too heavy and overtook the taste of the crab. We had split opinions on the brisket. My wife loved it, but it had much more of a stewed taste than I would have preferred. As well, if you grew up in a Southern home and are used to generally overcooked vegetables, you will likely fine the carrots and green beans needed a little more time on the stove. The toasted bread on the lobster roll was delicious, but, overall, we both felt the lobster roll was too heavy on the celery and lacked adequate seasoning. The parmesan fries were hot out the kitchen and great for the first 5 minutes. However, once they went from hot to warm, the true taste came through as a little bland and required additional seasoning as well. The crispy brussels sprouts, though not so crispy themselves, were quite good with the addition of the crispy onions. You know how when you look at a dessert, and it looks delicious and when you taste it, it’s amazing? That was definitely true for the tollhouse pie, not so true for the peach galette. The tollhouse pie had the constitution of a high quality chocolate chip cookie, really tasty. Be sure to ask them to warm it for you. The peach galette, however, was a real disappointment. You could barely taste the peach, but instead the dominant flavor was somehow an almond blend. While the service was top notch – courteous, informative, responsive – and pricing very reasonable, it’s hard to give this iconic restaurant anything higher than a 4. The food is good, but not great. BTW – As you would expect for the Virginia Highlands area, the parking is minimal… so come early to get a space or Uber."

"My wife and I wanted a nice laid-back place to sit outside and enjoy a fun dinner. We ended up being very disappointed by the service. Our server took about 10-15 minutes to get to the table (which feels like an eternity when you are waiting to order beverages). They took our drink order and quickly returned with a cocktail and waters but the beer we ordered was delayed by a few minutes. Not a big deal, but then the night went south. We didn't see our server again for a very long time. We started to feel like our appetizer was a little delayed when food runners showed up with our entrees. No app in sight. We let them know and eventually the server brought our app. But we were halfway into the meal by that point. The food tasted fine. Nothing extraordinary but not bad. The nachos, I admit, were delicious. The mac and cheese we ordered was described to have bread crumbs but was missing that. Fortunately the server had it taken care of pretty quickly. We were never asked about having our drinks refilled. And after eating, we waited a long time for our check. It just seemed to take forever for everything. None of the problems by themselves would have been a big deal, but together it added up to a somewhat unpleasant experience. The server was nice and apologetic. They also comped us the appetizer which was nice. May have been an off night or maybe a new server, but I can't say I would recommend going on a Saturday night. Also, we did enjoy the outdoor seating area. It was a little tight, but the ambiance was nice."

"When we arrived, we were told no self parking, valet only. We walked in and went to lounge to have an appetizer and drink before dinner. At least 4 tables were empty but full of dirty dishes and leftover food. We sat down at a table with glasses and thought someone would be by to pick them up. We eventually moved them to another dirty table. We realized there were no servers. One employee did bring a bottle of wine to a table of six. She looked like management. My husband went to bar and the bartender stood in front of him and did not serve him our drinks for15 minutes. The bar wasn't even crowded. 4 people (one party) sitting on the end on our side. Three people on the other side. The party of 4 raised their hand and the bartender left standing in front of my husband and got them a refill. He finally got our drinks bourbon and a Diet Coke and we ordered a flatbread mushroom and fig and it was delicious. We were seated at our table in the dining room and our server Justin was terrific. Attentive, professional, and friendly. Our food was outstanding. The tables in the dining room looked and felt like cafeteria style tables and there were wooden placemats that were chipped and warped. We were VERY surprised as we were so excited about an upscale hotel and restaurant coming to our town. For the price we paid, we will not come back but our Compliments to the chef."
