"I wanted to take my sister out for a special lunch when she was in town recently, so I took her to Vero. We got there just before noon and the place was empty, so the waiter brought us water and took our drink orders right away. From there, unfortunately, the service went downhill. The menu my sister looked at online didn 't match the menu we received, but we both found sandwiches that sounded good. I 'm a vegetarian, so I ordered the Veggie, with cheese, cucumber, avocado, etc. After a long wait for our drinks, the waiter took our order. A while later he returned and asked if I was the one who ordered the burger. I said I actually ordered the Veggie sandwich. He said okay and asked if I wanted fries or fruit on the side. (I found it odd that he didn 't ask my sister as well since she had also ordered a sandwich. In retrospect, at that point I should have pointed out on the menu what I had ordered because the waiter seemed confused. Sure enough, after another long wait, he finally brought our food and mine was a burger. (The only burger on the menu was made with beef. I told the waiter that I didn 't order a burger and wouldn 't have because I don 't eat meat, and he reluctantly took it away. In seconds, the gentleman who I assume was the manager returned with the burger in hand and said it was not meat; it was a vegan patty. I 'm not one to make a scene or get angry, and I didn 't want to ruin my sister 's lunch, so I conceded and ate the burger. When the manager seated four customers at a table near us (the only other customers in the restaurant , I took the opportunity to get his attention. I apologized for bringing up the issue again, but I wanted to make it clear that I did not order the burger. I described the veggie sandwich I had ordered, and he nodded in acknowledgment. Then he said, But did you like the burger? I was dumbfounded. I could not get him (or the waiter to admit to the mistake! Maybe I should have been more forceful. After that, the staff seemed to avoid us. When they refilled the water glasses at the other table, they did not refill ours. The waiter returned only to pick up our plates. We thought he 'd come back to ask if we wanted anything else...dessert, coffee, etc. But after waiting a while longer, the manager walked up and asked if we wanted our bill. As we walked out through the bar area, which was empty, the manager kept his back to us and didn 't say a word. Outside, my sister and I checked the posted menu to make sure I had not made a mistake when ordering. The veggie sandwich was listed in bold type under Sandwiches, just as I described it to the manager, and there was no veggie burger on the list. This was totally humiliating. The staff made me feel as if I was at fault when I clearly was not. No one offered to bring me what I ordered or give me any kind of compensation, even a cup of coffee. Heck, I would have just appreciated an apology, To me fine dining means more than good food; it means excellent service as well, and this is an area they obviously need to work on to be a four- or five-star establishment. It 's left a bad taste in my mouth, and I won 't go back."
