"This restaurant is decent, but I would rate it around a B-. We visited Gomatei at Ward on a Sunday evening at 5 PM and were the only diners there. We ordered the Tan Tan Ramen with Chashu and another with seafood, as the Tan Tan Ramen seems to be their specialty. While the seafood portions were generous, I found that the flavors didn't complement the broth very well; the calamari and shrimp were practically tasteless. On the other hand, the Chashu was wonderfully thick, which I appreciated—I'm used to much thinner slices, so this was a pleasant surprise! The broth had a mild spiciness and was slightly sesame-flavored, but overall, the taste was rather weak. I expected a stronger peanut or sesame flavor, so I was a bit disappointed. I also wasn't sure if the little flecks in the soup were fat or something from the Tan Tan. The standout of the dish was definitely the noodles, which had a more pronounced peanut and sesame flavor and a great texture. The portion sizes were good, but the flavors could use improvement. I've had better Tan Tan ramen in the past where the broth was the highlight. This place might just not be for me. My boyfriend's mom ordered the Shoyu Wonton Ramen and felt it was similarly lacking in flavor. Overall, it’s not a bad place, but it’s not something I would rave about either."
