"We visited Tavern for brunch/lunch on a Sunday in August after a challenging game of golf. Our group of 3 couples had reservations at noon. I had never been to Tavern before, but had been to other restaurants in the Village. Zoar is a magical place! The restaurant serves authentic German cuisine in a building that is over 188 years old. The front of the building has gorgeous landscapes and views of the canal. As we approached the restaurant, we saw a chef picking herbs from the garden to use in the dishes. The inside of the Tavern was cool and cozy, with a rustic charm. Our waitress seemed busy, as the restaurant had only one waitress inside and three outside on the packed patio. We ordered drinks, which arrived quickly, but refills were slow and empty glasses piled up on our table. We ordered a variety of dishes, including a sausage sampler, sauerkraut balls, cold sausage plate, and spaetzle soup. Everything was delicious, but the soup was lacking in dumplings and no bread was served to accompany it. I had the pork tenderloin, cooked rare and it was amazing. My husband loved his Shirred Eggs with bacon and truffles. Others in our group enjoyed the Meatloaf in a Crust. After our meal, we explored the rathskeller and upstairs dining room, rumored to be haunted. We chatted with visitors from Virginia about a buckeye tree before heading home. We look forward to returning for a romantic dinner in the future at Tavern."
