"We've dined regularly at Cafe Society for years always enjoyed it, so when our last visit, a couple months ago, was disappointing, I did not write a review and decided to give it another try. This time was worse, I won't be back Drinks: I ordered a specific top shelf liquor for my martini, definitely didn't receive it. Wine was good, but the pours inconsistent; one of our party received a brimming glass, another what appeared to be less than a half-pour Food: The menu now offers seafood rather than lobster bisque, which would be fine except it was a thin, watery soup with one piece of a shrimp. Taste appearance, we guessed it comes from a pre-made base to mix with water. The special was salmon piccata. It was just okay. The sauce was heavy featured about a half a jar's worth of capers, which overpowered the seafood. Worse, though, the pasta was very overcooked. Shrimp Caesar salad had been stuck in the fridge so the hot shrimp melted the parm, which congealed to the plate so I had to scrape my plate to try to eat my salad The Roasted Oysters Maurice has always been my favorite dish on the menu. At my last visit, the presentation had changed from oysters on the half-shell to a dish in the sauce. At that time, the toasted bread was stale inedible, while the oysters were no longer freshly shucked, but from a container. It was disappointing. When I went again this week, it was disgusting. Again the dish featured a shallow bowl of sauce scant oysters with bread on the side. The sauce was fine, but when I bit into an oyster, it made me gag. They were old and decayed, an unpleasant mush with a foul taste. I'm sure the bucket of shucked oysters has been in and out of the freezer or reach-in multiple times in an attempt to stretch its lifespan. I recognize cost-cutting measures that restaurants have thin profit margins, but the food has become inedible. I'm so disappointed, but after two poor meals in a row, I think I won't be back."

"Had a superb dinner here on a rainy Saturday night. It was raining so we ate in the main dining room of this charming and lovingly restored historic hotel. Weather permitting, the back garden with pleasant lighting and a beautiful fountain would have been my first choice for seating. The long, covered front porch, with plenty of comfortable rocking chairs was a perfect spot to enjoy after dinner coffee or a cognac and listen to the rain. Dinner began with everyone at our table of 5 ordering the special corn soup. Our beautiful server, Kelly, tipped us off that this is a very special treat and only made when fresh, local corn is available. It was the best tasting dish anyone has ever made with fresh corn. Unlike corn chowder, it was puréed, without cream, making it wonderfully light and bursting with corn flavor. It was topped with a couple of large, blackened shrimp and fresh, red hot pepper. The corn soup stole the show, and launched us into culinary stratosphere. We enjoyed the much photographed lamb chops, a perfectly cooked steak, the sumptuous crab and shrimp enchilada, a seafood stew and a crispy schnitzel with red cabbage reduction. And just when you thought it could not get any better, for dessert we all had some of the house special maple cream layer cake. A tall, blond, buttery cake with silky maple cream frosting. It is a huge slice that was easy to share, but you secretly wanted it all to yourself."
