"This a completely vegetarian Indian restaurant ironicly right next to a meat shop and deli. My husband and I live two hours from Woodlands but it 's more than worth the travel and gas. The food is like magic and we moan with pleasure and grin like idiots while eating. The Kofta, which are spiced potato 'meatballs ' in a tomato curry sauce sprinkled with fresh parsley and cilantro, are so marvelous the English language suddenly seems clumsy and incompetent and falls hopelessly short. The samosas are applause worthy, they are potatoes, peas, coriander, and turmeric in a deep fried triangular pastry served with chili-tamarind sauce. The coconut rice is over priced but still very hard not to get and we 're always trying to figure out what the little balls in it are. They don 't taste like peppercorns but they are about that size, whatever they are they 're good. The waiter seems deeply depressed and never smiles but is not rude. The restaurant is relatively small and cute and always has lovely Indian music playing. The menu is a very good size and the portions are generous but not ridiculous. Even the fried food is never greasy and you always feel good when you leave. It 's mostly Indian people eating here so that tells me it 's probably pretty authentic cooking. It 's not vegan friendly, there 's only about two dishes without dairy but that is what Indian food is known for. I introduced my husband to this place and he 'd never tried Indian food before, but now this is where he demands to be brought every year for his birthday. Even my four year old loves it! Can 't say enough good things about this place. It had better always stay in business."

"My vegetable vindaloo was phenomenal. Rather spicy, but also flavorful. I felt so much warmth and rejuvenation in every bite. It was unbelievable. It felt like bliss in food form. I didn’t miss the chicken whatsoever, as the vegetables did the job just perfectly. The rice was also warm and spicy. The food also looked beautiful. The vindaloo had a boiling red color that perfectly matched the exhilarating heat. I was doubtful about how good vegetarian Indian food would be, but Samudra didn’t just exceed my expectations, no, Samudra eclipsed all of my preconceptions about what vegetarian food could be. Samudra proved to me that meat’s importance may be overstated, at least from a culinary standpoint. Even without meat, the vindaloo was the most tasty I’d ever had. The spice was perfectly balanced: enough to pack a punch, but still scarce enough not to overwhelm the flavors. And boy, were they good flavors. Did I mention that this meal was $12? $12, for one of the best meals of my life. What a steal. Samudra is why I explore restaurants, to find something brilliant and different, that also illuminates me. Not only was the food brilliant and unique, my dinner at Samudra changed my entire culinary outlook. I once saw meat as crucial, and in fact, I was dreading an Indian meal without warm chicken or pork, but Samudra has changed my mind: vegetarian food can be as good if not better than anything with meat. Adjusted for price, Samudra is my favorite Indian restaurant, even without price, it probably still is. (Although Astoria’s Seva is phenomenal, too. But with price, this food is unbeatable. Not to mention that Samudra is a place I can take everyone: meat eaters and vegetarians. I left Samudra feeling both light, and enlightened. I love everything about Samudra, from the dingy aesthetic, to the expansive menu, to the amazing prices, to the unmatchable quality of the food. Is this my new favorite restaurant? Maybe. Rating: 10/10 Adjusted Rating: 10/10"

"We love East Indian food, and a non violent diet. Between us, we've sampled India cuisine in many cities, and in other countries. When we discovered this place 15 years ago, we were hooked. At the time, it offered southern style cooking, mostly based on coconut and very comfort food feeling. The place has apparently gone through several different management changes over the years, and different kitchen leads, but still provides vegetarian fare with pretty consistent quality. In particular, we will drive an hour or more to the Thursday night buffet, which comes with masala dosa as part of the deal potato inside, but you can ask for plain dosa also . The current chef cook must be a walking encyclopedia of recipes something new nearly every time. We'd never had pani puri until he brought it out for one of the buffets. From time to time here have been celebration special dishes when an East Indian national religious or agricultural festival occurs or for some other holiday. We've overheard 'new' people commenting that they could eat vegetarian if it was like this and Wow so many flavors! We've overheard meat eaters with their veg friends, commenting that veg eating can be interesting fun. Lately we've noticed that when they are busy, we may have to remind the wait staff to order our dosas, or remind them to put out more little bowls for the soup. Although the general management of materials and staff has slipped in the last year, it's a small inconvenience when considering the food which remains the reason for coming back."
