"It was my mother's birthday and she chose this place. I checked the reviews and immediately knew this was not worth the visit. I made an OpenTable reservation, but this does not have a system to check in these reservations, but use a notebook. Don't understand why they're here yet. The manager I think led us to a remote area in the back there was another table, so it really felt lonely : . Anyway, we all arrived and the server w/a tattoo on his arm did not imagine) lacking service so much I wanted to complain, but I did not want to ruin the day. The server would ignore all the guys, even if they were longer there and the women ask for drinks, and one thing he went on to take instead of all drinks orders at once. It probably took half an hour to get drinks. I got her new bright beer, which was good, another person got a goose butter and it was too flat for tasting, we had to send it back to the switching point twice. Then we ordered three appetizers: goat cheese fondue, Calamari and something with vegetables. The Calamari was so depressing NOT WORTH IT. It was gummy and tiny like popcorn chicken! The presentation was terrible. The goat cheese fondue also depressed 5 sliced pieces of bread with a bowl of cheese. Then our entrees came, everyone enjoyed their food, which was good, but it didn't wake me, or anyone else. The server came once to check on us and then MIA. Once we finished with our entrees, we waited for the server to hopefully ask ourselves if we want dessert. Not even he mentioned Dessert, but he gave us many times. I had to throw him down and ask if they did something for a day. I ordered my mother a chocolate slice and it was delicious, then we order bread pudding, which was good. Overall, I would never come back unless I drink. It has more a bar atmosphere than anything else. I would not recommend this place for a special occasion."

"Our experience.. Got there right when they opened so there wasn’t a wait. We get seated in the side room for my party of 7. 4 adults and 3 kids. Took my kids to the bathroom a couple times throughout dinner and felt like we were purposely put in a room away from other guests because I had a baby because the rest of the bar and seating areas had adults in it. So right off the bat, got the vibes of this not being a very family friendly place. And my feeling was right; there was absolutely NO kids menu on the menu. So we were stuck spending full price on meals for my kids. But oh wait, here’s the kicker! You get charged to share plates! We had fees put on our bill for my two older kids to share off a plate as well as my mother in law getting charged extra. She had stated we are out of town and aren’t taking leftovers home so she could just graze off my father in laws plate if she had to but would take a bowl of the clam chowder. She NEVER ate off my father in laws plate. But the charge was there so when the bill came, she asked about the extra charge on there but because my mother in law said she’d share with my father in law if he couldn’t eat it all, was put on there. The waitress then very SNIPPY I might add, says that it tells you on the menu there’s a charge for sharing. That we’re lucky we were only charged $2/person instead of $10 like a lot of places. So with that being said, for fun, looked at the menu and NOWHERE on there did it say there was a charge for splitting! Despite the French onion soup being good, liking my Cobb Salad, was disappointed that there was only one choice for a Friday night fish fry special and it only came deep fried? The breading on the haddock was lighter than the walleye breading. My husband ended up peeling off all the breading and ate just the fish out of it. They had a $30 salmon special but nothing else for fish which is very unfortunate being we are from Wisconsin, Fridays are for fish and old fashions. Everyone, including my three kids, really enjoyed the clam chowder soup. With all of this being said, nothing will convince me to come back with my kids. We will find something a little more kid friendly as they’re on vacation too. Kid-friendliness: Definitely NOT kid friendly. There is no kids menu options on the menu. So if you’re a family of five like us, don’t expect to leave there without paying $100 for all of you to eat. Expect a split plate charge for sharing an entree amongst your children to make it affordable for your kids to eat there"

"I hadn't visited Gale Street Inn since it was remodeled, which was probably over five years ago. The new interior is modern, upscale, and clean, but I personally miss the old lodge atmosphere—it felt a bit uncomfortable for us this time. They've also removed the salad bar, likely a casualty of the pandemic as it wasn't being used. I made our reservation through a credit card website that offers additional points for dining at promoted restaurants. The reservation system requested details like special occasions, any allergies in our party, and seating preferences. However, upon arrival, they didn’t seem to check for our reservation; we were just quickly seated in the dining room. Our waitress was unaware that we had a shellfish allergy or that we were celebrating a birthday, but she was very nice, and the rest of the staff was helpful as well. Our water glasses were always full, plates were promptly cleared, and both our waitress and the manager checked on us after we were served. We ordered soup and salads, which arrived quickly, but then we experienced a significant delay. The dining room was about one-third full, and only two tables had ordered just before us while others had already received their meals. Suddenly, our waitress stopped by to ask if we needed more drinks. We ordered additional soda, and she left. A few minutes later, another staff member came by to check on us, and we mentioned that we were still waiting for our drinks. The waitress returned shortly after to inform us that the kitchen was “a little behind” and asked if we needed anything. We reiterated that we just wanted the drinks we ordered. She brought them right away. It's unclear whether the kitchen was overwhelmed with to-go orders or if our order was simply overlooked, as we received our meals several minutes later when no other dishes were coming out of the kitchen. It made us wonder about the actual delay. As for the food, it was average. My mashed potatoes and baked French onion soup were delicious, but the steak, which cost $67, was a disappointment—it lacked seasoning and crust, and honestly, I could have cooked it better over a campfire. On a positive note, the restaurant was clean, the parking lot was spacious, and the location was easy to find. Unfortunately, given our experience, it's hard for me to see us returning. Our total for two adults and a teenager who ordered a $10 kids' meal, including tip, was $175. Overall, it was a dinner with beloved family at Gale Street Inn, but not enough to entice us back."
