"I am quite passionate about Thai food since much of it is delicious. However, since much of their food is on the spicier side, I tend not to eat a lot of it. Which takes me to the city of Albany where I had the opportunity in trying out Bua Luang . Located in the heart of downtown Albany directly on Solano Ave and just a couple blocks east of San Pablo Ave, this place has been dishing out delicious South Asian Thai food dating way back to 1990. Which means locals and residents of surrounding areas have eaten here at least one time or another. As far as their menu goes, this place is fairly standard with a wide variety of Thai offerings. This includes noodles, curry dishes, seafood specialties, soups, fried rice, and salads. I came here with my significant other during the evening of Saturday 4/20/2024 at around 8:00pm. Luckily they were open until 9:00pm which gave us ample time to dine-in, order, and enjoy our food. As far as the interior layout, this place has a very classic cozy feel to it with wooden accents and unique Thai-inspired displays throughout. It isn 't the biggest place but still enough to accommodate at least 30 customers. They do have a very nice wooden outdoor deck (which I am guessing was built during the pandemic) to enjoy the more comfortable days and evenings. The hours are also quite generous as they are open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30am-2:30pm (for lunch) and 5:00-9:00pm (for dinner) while they are closed for business on Monday. Once seated, we were given two iced water. I knew exactly what I wanted prior to coming here and that was none other than one of their main signature dishes, their Panang Beef . This dish used thick red 'Panang ' curry with tender beef, lime leaves, ground peanuts, bell peppers, sweet basil, and coconut milk while served with broccoli. My lady went with their Pad See-Ewe (with chicken) which is pan-fried rice noodles with traditional broccoli, Chinese broccoli, carrots, eggs and bean sauce. We also opted for a side of Jasmine rice and I chose their Thai Iced tea as my beverage of choice. Both of our dishes arrived in roughly 10 minutes and everything was piping hot. As for my beef dish, it has the perfect amount of sweet and spicy with a distinctive and noticeable coconut/curry flavor to it. Even though I am not the biggest fan of spicy food, I could tolerate this. I sampled some of her Pad See-Ewe and this was cooked to perfection as there was a very generous serving of chicken inside. Overall, its safe to say that the food in general was above average and delicious. Not jaw dropping amazing but a smart choice if you 're looking for a family-owned Thai restaurant in the East Bay. All in all, Bua Luang was the perfect comfort food for our Saturday evening. And if you can 't dine-in or even pickup your order, they offer online ordering delivery through all the major food apps; DoorDash, Grubhub, Uber Eats, and Postmates. As for the restaurant itself, the service that our female waitress provided was excellent as she made sure our waters were filled up and that everything tasted delicious. The atmosphere, ambiance, price, and most importantly, the food was good. My rating for Bua Luang, an above average four stars."

"Stopped in here for dinner with some friends and was intrigued by the look of this place on Instagram and the favorable reviews. It is a really cute and cozy restaurant and the food comes out looking beautiful but unfortunately the flavors in the food were a bit basic. The menu is HUGE and has something for everyone which is probably why the dishes failed to impress. We ordered mostly Thai dishes and even specified that we wanted something extra spicy and nothing was spicy in the least. The Pad That and Pad Khao (fried rice) were best in the flavor department. The Khao Soi was pretty flavorless. The Mango Sticky Rice was the only dish where the presentation was just confusing and the dish itself was pretty unremarkable. The overall flavor profile here is sweet and could use a few more chilis, fish sauce, and lime wedges! As others noted, food and drinks come out a little slow, but the servers were very nice and got us everything we needed in a timely manner. I had to take a star off because they brought us one liter carafe of water for a table of 6 and never refilled or noticed to bring us another. The 2 servers were hustling but not that hard. I think this place is great for a first date or casual stop in where you just want to enjoy the beautifully decorated atmosphere and stay awhile! "Most nearby Thai restaurants are closed on Sundays, so this was a pleasant surprise that they open on a Sunday. We ordered by phone without even looking at the menu, and the staff knew what the dishes we asked are. All came down to $60+, on the expensive side but it 's fine we are trying for the first time. Said the order ready in 15 min which is pretty fast compared to others. The interior was fancier than many other Thai because it has a bar. But that also gives you an idea that the food is more tailored for American taste buds. Pad Thai Tofu there 's a lack of the Pad Thai strong fermentation flavor, so while it probably appeases the general public, it doesn 't have that unique flavor that so many can 't stand. It 's more like tomato ketchup noodles, which is delicious in itself, but just not what I think is a good pad thai. Severely lacking the sour profile. Additional missing ingredients is bean sprouts! Instead they have red and white chopped cabbage. Again, while pretty delicious, it 's just lacks the authentic flavor , even tho the dish itself is not authentic by any means. Tofu is fried and just OK. They still had the crushed peanuts so that 's good. My husband likes this better than the more authentic version. Pad kee mao beef this was really really disappointing. While it 's good that it 's not spicy (I 've never had a pad kee mao that 's not spicy... because our kids can eat it, the flavor is nothing like pad kee mao. Just salty, particularly the eggs. Flavor of basil is very very muted and limited. Beef cuts are tough to chew. They didn 't give a lot of noodles but gave a lot of veggies, which is great!! But the veggies are like not authentic to Thai food, it 's just mixed Asian stir fry veggies like mini corn and water chestnut. Along with bell peppers. Very interesting and weird combo. I like the veggie component, it 's just not what I could consider pad kee mao. Probably wouldn 't order again. Completely missing the taste profile. Lad nar beef this wasn 't bad, but they used Chinese broccoli instead? Beef is not coated or tenderized so it 's tough to eat. Sauce is OK, but lack the sweetness. Just very muted Thai flavors to appease the general public. If you are looking for strong Thai flavors, this place is not it. The food itself is still tasty. This one is not as weird as pad kee mao. Probably would order again for the kids. Fish cake appetizer this imo was done better than other places, I liked how fluffy and fried it is, it 's much softer than other places. Loved the spices and herby tastes, which is similar to others. Probably sourced from the same place so it generally tastes similar. The dipping sauce has cucumber and crushed peanuts like other places. A bit more syrupy than other places but tastes the same. Thai iced tea this one I think it 's done better than other more traditional Thai places. I liked the distinction of the tea flavor at the bottom and the milk up top. It doesn 't taste like premade mix like other places even if they used the same method. I can actually taste the tea here. Also love the handle and design of the carry out version. Would order again! Overall I think it 's a pretty OK place for Thai food. Something fast and edible, and fancier than others. The portion size is equal or smaller than other places. I think I might reserve this place as a second option for Sunday cravings of Thai food."

"Sanamluang Cafe Hollywood, nestled in the heart of Thaitown, is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and culinary offerings. With a reputation bolstered by numerous accolades from food enthusiasts, my visit was highly anticipated. However, while expectations were soaring, the experience fell short in delivering the Thai culinary excellence it's celebrated for. The initial disappointment surfaced through a commonality among the dishes an overwhelming saltiness that overshadowed the authentic flavors. The Pad See Ew, notably drenched in an abundance of oyster sauce, lacked the desired chewiness in its noodles, deviating from the expected texture. Similarly, the Yellow Curry, known for its rich coconut milk base, leaned excessively on the salty side, unfortunately detracting from its otherwise enticing flavors. Despite these setbacks, a glimmer of hope emerged with the Shrimp Cake—a true standout. Masterfully crafted with a crispy exterior that encased a tender and succulent interior, this dish showcased the kitchen's prowess and highlighted the potential for culinary brilliance. However, the deviation from traditional Thai jasmine rice to regular rice may have contributed to a divergence from the expected aromatic experience that complements Thai cuisine. In reflection, while the Sanamluang Cafe Hollywood might not have met personal preferences, particularly with a penchant for milder seasoning and authentic textures akin to the Thai culinary experiences found in the SGV area, the Shrimp Cake shines as a beacon of the restaurant's potential. Perhaps, for those with a taste for bolder flavors and a penchant for salty sweet undertones, this establishment might resonate more positively."
