"We moved to Peterborough a few years ago and have been searching for a special place for dinner. There are lots of interesting places here, but RARE will be our go-to for anniversaries, birthdays etc. It is fundamentally a steak house, but everything is done with flair and is delicious! I'm not a steak lover, but was more than satisfied with a great arugula and goat cheese salad followed by their special poutine. The poutine had a amazingly flavourful beef mixture on the top that was wonderful - I would have eaten it alone! My husband had a lovely trout filet with beautiful veggies and a twice-baked potato - he enjoyed all of it. The trout was light and flavourful.Desserts were the weakest part of the meal - the apple flan was described as being like a pancake, so I imagined Tarte Tatin, but it was more of an apple cake. The caramelized bits around the edges were good, but the cake uninspiring and disappointing. The strawberry shortcake was similarly uninspiring - didn't have the rich shortcake flavour that I'd expect. On the contrary, both were accompanied by a great French Vanilla ice cream.Coffee was wonderfully dark and strong, a bit reminiscent of the lovely coffee in Portugal. Our server was great, though there were a few glitches. We sat for 5+ minutes without menus, and she was surprised that they weren't at the table when she came for our order. She managed the glitch with humour, and provided attentive service throughout the meal, though we could see she was very busy... on a Tuesday night. Clearly reservations are needed.Go and enjoy!"
